Roark is Back

January 25, 2013

Roark Red-Shoulder Hawk

Roark Red-Shoulder Hawk

We have had some rather yucky weather here in San Marcos but the hawks love it because the grubs come to the surface and are easy pickings.   We have actually had a pair of hawks in the backyard most every morning. Wouldn’t it be fun if they nested but I think they like to nest in tall trees which we don’t have in our backyard. We just have lots of grubs for them to feed on.

I just got a text message from Austin, he just completed “3D Animation,” at Platt College with a score of 99%.  One more course down on his way to his BA degree.

I turn 70 tomorrow and I must say, so far it has been a great ride. It helps not to spend too much time looking in the mirror, front or rear view. Donna and I have several trips planned for 2013 and may add a few more just for fun.  We are really getting into road trips and just stopping when something looks interesting, but to be honest it is hard to find a more exciting place than our backyard. This week we have seen red-shoulder hawks, kestrels, scrub- jays, mockingbirds, hummingbirds, yellow-rumped warblers, cedar waxwings, bushtits and a ruby-crown kinglet.

Here is some great advice for a rainy day: Play in the puddles.

You have a great day, I am off to play in the puddles.

Carlos, Donna and Austin

Happy, Happy Birthday, Carlos, and here’s to many more fantastic years ahead! And—about the rain—at least it isn’t that perilous ice and snow we have here in the midwest! Even my intrepid squirrels aren’t navigating much today! Enjoy your travels and be safe. Have you seen any owls around your yard this week?

    • carlosroyal Says:

No owls, in fact, I have been receiving reports that most of the owl boxes do not have barn owls. I don’t know if something has happened to reduce the population but I do know that we are hearing the calls of the Great Horned Owls now late at night where we didn’t before. Great Horned Owls like to feed on Barn Owls. If the barn owls are going to show up, they should be showing up anytime time. This is about the time Molly showed up back in 2010. We will keep our fingers crossed for those looking for barn owls for their boxes.

    • carlosroyal Says:

Since I have recieved so many emails wanting to know if something had caused a decline in the Barn Owl population. It seems like most of the owl boxes do not have barn owls yet. I called the Department of fish and wildlife and what they said is that the barn owl population will vary or self regulate with the food supply and the weather. They also pointed out that is a little early to get concerned because the nesting season is just starting and it has been cold. His recommendation was to give them to the end of February. If you start seeing barn owls let us know.

I love to think back on all the hours spent watching the owls! I loved it. It greatly saddened my heart when you had to write and tell us about that you were not seeing them anymore. Little do they know how they transformed so many lives! Have a wonderful 2013. Kudos to your grandson! 99% is fantastic!

  19. Happy 70th Carlos! You know, 70 is the new 50. Happy trails to you and Donna and safe travels. No playing in puddles at my place….we are stomping through the snow and trying to avoid slipping on ice. I have a pair of Red Shouldered Hawks…they like to pose for the camera; and a very bad Coppers hawk or two. I always enjoy drinking out of my Molly mugs.

  20. Leatha Smith-Fo Says:

So nice to hear from you Carlos. We haven’t heard anything in along time it seems. A little weird today though- go to the KITV face book page. They found a barn owl hanging from a tree near punch bowl in Honolulu. Hang by the wing that is- they saved him and tended to his injured wing. It’s a nice story.

We have two Great Horned owls that call the area around our home their territory. They have been around for about 10 yrs. (or maybe their offspring have inherited the area). In summer, we stay in Wyoming, and there too, we have a Great Horned owl that visits on our porch. Since Molly, the barn owl has taken my heart. The attached video of a Barn Owl is fun to watch. I hope you will enjoy it as I did. You’ll have to type it in you browser.

No owls, but we did have a duck show up in our backyard this morning plus the blue birds are back and thinking about nesting. We just returned from our 30 day cruise of the Indian Ocean. It was great and very enlightening. We are off again next week, going to North Dakota to play in the last of the snow, which should feel good since where we were for the last month was really hot and humid. All the best and who knows maybe the owls will be back next year.

Sounds like you are having some fabulous adventures. If time allows, it would be great to see some of your cruise photos. Do you have any interesting anecdotes about the trip?
    Happy travels!

  98. Pam in MO Says:

I hope we hear from you both soon. But today
I want to wish Donna a Happy Mother’s Day. God Bless.

  99. Judy Sackson Says:

Happy Mother’s Day to Donna and to all the MODs out there!
It’s very hot here right now, and I hope it doesn’t mean that we’re in for a bad summer. Playing in that snow sounds very
enticing right now. Happy travels, Royals! Hope we have owls again one day!

  100. It’s been a while since I’ve been on this site. Carlos, I want to wish you a very belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!! Thank you so much for all you and Donna have provided us. I can’t thank you enough for all the wonderful days I spent watching Molly & McGee and their babies!! It was a wonderful adventure!!!!!

  101. lilbirdz Says:

Carlos and Donna, we are all eager to see a few of the hundreds of photos from your 30 day cruise around the Indian Ocean and your latest jaunts in the USA. Of course, we also want to hear of Austin’s progress at Platt College, even if some of us don’t exactly understand what those courses are. On this Memorial Day weekend, we thank you for your service to our country.Molly and McGee are still in our hearts, so thanks for that wonderful experience.

  102. J. Says:

Funny how we keep looking for a post or pictures from Carlos. Last was in January, 2013. I do think that Carlos and Donna have flown the coop for good and moved on, ala Molly and McGee.
It’s hard to break the habit after so long, isn’t it?

  103. Jerri Weed Says:

    Hi Donna & Carlos,

I happened to come Across this Wonderful Video of the Great Hand Shake with The Owlets on Ustream. I Do Hope you will Enjoy Again as I sure Have.
Hope this Note Finds You Well.

Thanks for the link, KS. I just finished watching it, and my goodness, what lovely memories it brought back! Those were the days!

      • CAequuslvr Says:

KS, thanks so much for this link. So wonderful to relive such a wonderful, special time. BIG sigh.
        Best to all the MODs.

      • Jerri Weed Says:

KS has to admit if My Memory Serves Me Correct, you went to a Molly Get Together and I think you Represented me by Putting my Name on your Name Tag. Thank You CA!

      • CAequuslvr Says:

Yes, thanks for the honor of letting me represent you — good memory. People were so very disappointed when they realized that I was not you.
I too enjoy my M&M prints. I think that it is so special that we will have all of those wonderful memories for the rest of our lives.

        Take care & Be well.

  104. janie2 Says:

KSBORN, I have saved several of my favorite moments in the owl box. Wake up Wesley and Carrie needs coffee are just 2 of them. I admit I have tried to watch other owl boxes and it just isn’t the same. Molly and Magee and of course Carlos will live in my heart forever.

    • Jerri Weed Says:

I myself have Moderated in a Few Owl Boxes but Molly & McGee will Always Be in My Heart…Everyday that I sit in front of my Computer I get the Joy to Look Up and See the Beautiful Print that I had Framed by Chris Adams, oh the Print is Molly & Max.

I too Have Several Moments That I kept but the One I posted yesterday happened to be 3 years to the Date and I so Loved the Hand Shake…

  105. Lynn Says:

Carlos and Donna….I hope you can take some photos during your travels and share them with us…your photography was always spectacular. Thanks so much!

  107. Nancy Says:

Miss my emails from Carlos and Donna. Hope all is well.

    • carlosroyal Says:

All is well. We just got back from our travels and plan to spend the rest of the summer at home or just a few short trips. We have hummingbirds, orioles and bluebirds flying all around our backyard, so lots of activity to watch at home.

      All the best,

      • CAequuslvr Says:

Carlos, how wonderful to hear from you. So glad to hear that you and Donna are enjoying your own backyard and that all is well. We too had a hummingbird. “Hannah” raised 2 very cute, healthy, active babies (I am amazed that the very delicate and tiny nest survived them). We hoped she would stay,to raise the next ones but we have not seen her for a while now, *sigh*.

Will Austin be taking the summer off from his studies?

        Take care & Be well.

      • erindort Says:

Welcome home! It’s so good to hear that you and Donna have enjoyed your travels. I would love to see some of the travel photos, and hear about any adventures you had! I think of you so often.

      • Carlos, Great to hear from you! Just telling my bro-in-law from NE about the whole Molly thing and thought I would check in to see how you and Donna are doing. Our Goldfinches are singing us happy songs!

Carlos & Donna, I feel sure we’ll hear from you one of these days. I trust you’re having blast.

    • erindort Says:

Well, this is an AMAZING photo! Even after observing nature for over 40 years, I am in awe of these little creatures.

  113. CAequuslvr Says:

Amazing. Talk about some serious parenting. Thanks for sharing.

I also hope that we hear soon from Carlos & Donna.

  114. joly2u Says:

Thanks everybody for still coming on the site. It’s nice to keep the good feeling, and hope for touching base with the Royals now and then.

  115. marifun56 Says:

Hoping all is well in the Royal/Faure family. MODS are still talking. Thank you for intoducing us.

  116. g. albrecht Says:

I have always enjoyed coming to this site for updates. I too hope all is well with the Royal’s. Any new news? Is the barn owl home occupied & if so, any little ones? Thanks!

    • carlosroyal Says:

No owls in the box at this time. We have replaced the old box with a new one. We will just have to wait and see what happens next season. All is well with the Royal’s, we have over 25 hummingbirds feeding at this time but they should be leaving soon. Most of the orioles have already started their migration back to Mexico for the coming winter, we had 8 feeding in our backyard earlier this summer. That is the most we have ever had. As the cooler weather arrives Donna and I will be doing more short get aways. To put it simply we are off to enjoy our senior years while the sun is shining, the moom is full and the stars are bright, and the old car will still get down the road.

Have a great day, I know plan to.

      • Says:

Hello, hello Carlos! Wonderful to Hear from you. Sounds like you and Donna are having a great time in all your travels. We all miss you two and wish you well! flukestail

      • carlosroyal Says:

Thank you, one can never have too many wishes of wellness or thoughts of happiness and good times. Jobs of Apple Computers is credited with saying he wanted to change the world and put a dent in the universe, I believe those that watched Molly and the owl box did just that with 21 million new connections. No, we didn’t dent the universe, we expanded it by sharing.

      • janie2 Says:

How wonderful to hear from you and Donna, Carlos. We all miss you so much! Wishing you safety for all your trips. Happy trails.

  117. monkie Says:

Great to hear from you Carlos and Donna… We have missed you but so happy you are both enjoying your trips and back yard!! Hope you have new renters next year in your newly furbished owl box…Can’t wait to hear from you both again soon. Enjoy your adventures, wherever they will take you.. ((hugz)) and safe travels.

  118. Lynn Says:

It’s so good to hear from you, Carlos…I/we have been
wondering how you and Donna are doing and what you’ve
been seeing in your wonderful backyard. I would love to have 25 hummingbirds to watch! Enjoy the rest of the summer and also your traveling in the fall….we’d love to see some
    photos taken during your travels!

  119. CAequuslvr Says:

Carlos, thanks so much for the update. So happy that you and Donna are enjoying your travels. Be safe & well.
I am sad to hear that the original owl box is no more (the wonderful, special memories are forever), but I am pleased that a new one is all ready for future residents.

  120. Gail Says:

It’s wonderful to have your update, Carlos. Let’s hope the new owl box has a family of owls. So happy to hear that you and Donna are well and enjoying more travels.

  121. Elizabeth Says:

Good to hear from you again Carlos. Will the new box have a camera so we can see pictures of the new owls? Hope so. Would love to see the blue birds again too.

  122. Karen Ortiz Says:

Hello Carlos and Donna! I was just going through my coffee table book with pictures of the first clutch. Those pics bring such a smile to my face but also a tinge of sadness for what once was. Molly and McGee provided such a wonderful learning and fun-filled experience for my first graders and me. I miss that first exposure to the world of owls and the laughs we had. So glad to hear you have a new owl box. Let’s hope for some residents. Have safe journeys you two!

  123. JKW Says:

Thank you Carlos for updating. I miss you both so much. I love owls and birds of all kinds. I have a blog with mostly Ducks. I finally found ‘Duck Food’ and they like that. Keep us posted every so often. . .thank you. Blessings, Janet

    • CAequuslvr Says:

Janet, a very nice blog. The ducks are very lucky to have such a devoted caretaker. Thank-you for sharing.

    • erindort Says:

JKW — What a fun blog! So many of your references brought back great childhood memories. I especially enjoyed the “red-on-black, safe-for-jack” quote in the July post. Loved all the pictures, too.

  124. lilbirdz Says:

Carlos and Donna, you have spoiled us with your superb photos from previous trips. We would all love to see where you have been enjoying yourselves “while the sun is shining, etc.” We are all also eager to know how our beloved Austin is dong. Will there be a graduation soon? Does the new owlbox have residents yet?

  125. YTQ Says:

So good to hear from you again!

  126. joly2u Says:

Carlos – How nice of you to update. Glad you & Donna are catching up on your r&r, you sure earned it.
I think you started a wave that continues to expand. In any case I know the experience changed my perceptions permanently, & I am so grateful. I try to explain to people, but unless they have watched (fanatically) like we did, they have no reference to get that they’re not getting it. Seeing what the owls are really like was astounding, it just blew me away. How fortunate it was your box in which Molly took refuge, few others could/would have been so brilliant in creating that very special opportunity.
And ditto to those above. I know your neighborhood may be overbooked with owl boxes at the moment, but if little charmers find your address we’d love to know.

  127. Donna R Says:

Have just returned from a bird rescue and saw a very handsome barn owl. Brought back many many happy memories of our dear Molly and McGee and families. I so have missed you and all the mods. Thanks for the happy times we all shared.

    • Says:

Donna! What a wonderful surprise to open up my email and see a note from you. You miss us?!?! Ha! We miss YOU! And Carlos and Austin…and Molly, McGee & family. It was a magical time in all our lives…and each of us was left changed forever. We all get reminded of those days when we see or hear something that brings to mind a beautiful little heart-shaped-face momma owl named Molly. And then Molly reminds us of the Royals! Absolutely lovely to hear from you. Write and post as often as you can. (((Hugs))) to you, Carlos and Austin!

      flukestail aka Sherry

      • Donna from Colorado Says:

Hi Sherry! This is NOT Donna Royal. I am another Donna that lives in Colorado! Sorry for the confusion. I will sign my name differently from now on. However it was nice hearing from you and yes the Royals did give all of us a wonderful gift and friends forever that I have never met. Blessings to you and to all.

      • Says:

Hi, Donna! Funny mix-up. :). No matter…because still all true when Donna Royal reads this. Thanks for writing back!

  128. Darlene Salisbury Says:

It’s great to hear from you Donna! What a pleasant surprise! I certainly hope you and Carlos are doing well! You and Carlos made such a huge impact in thousands of peoples lives. We now have forever friends thanks to Molly & McGee, you and Carlos! What a gift that keeps on giving.

  129. Amy Says:

Yay for Austin! Love birds of prey. Thanks for the update.
