Home Coming

Spencer & Ashley
Spencer just returned from Afghanistan

After serving 10 months in Afghanistan, Spencer returns home to waiting arms in Hawaii. Ashley and Spencer will be living in Hawaii where Spencer’s battalion is stationed when not on deployment. We are relieved and thankful that he has returned safely. While Spencer was in Afghanistan, Ashley was here completing her training in Cosmetology. She will return to California to take her State Board Exam. She is just waiting on the date and time so they can make it a vacation to California.

Austin starts his final set of classes tomorrow for his AA degree. Just five weeks to go but then there are no breaks for him as he has already enrolled to get his BA degree in Media Arts and those classes start the day after he gets his AA degree. No rest for him.

Calvin looking for a mate

Calvin has returned to the weathervane and has been calling for a mate hoping for a second clutch but so far he is the only kestrel I have seen in the neighborhood since the last brood and Caleigh fledged. Kestrels have a way of disappearing south into Mexico. The hummers and the orioles continue to brave the heat and feed in the shade of the mimosa tree.

Skyview Apartment Complex update: We have moved to 90% occupancy. It has been a long hard struggle but we are getting there thanks to Roscoe Properties. I also want to thank Janice Veteran who lives in the area and keeps me updated with local news articles on real estate.

All the best,

Carlos, Donna and Austin

P.S. Six bluebirds skipped from tree to tree ahead of me this morning as I walked around the block but what was most interesting was to see a murder of crows drop stolen eggs from a nearby nest onto the road cracking them open for a breakfast feast.

Anyone else think the e-mail headline “Homecoming” meant Molly was back? :) Wonderful news about Spencer getting back home safe and sound. Wishing all the troops were on their way back as well. All of you enjoy the vacation time together when they make it over to California…and good luck to both Austin and Ashley!

  11. doxielver Says:

We have owls! My concern will they try and get my small dauchunds? They do fly bys checking them out. I’m nervous. I can’t find anything on web search about that. Can u answer with your knowledge ? Thanks terry. From Oklahoma.

    • Lynn Says:

doxielver: If they are Great Horned Owls I would be concerned. If so it would be best to keep them on leash or supervised…and especially don’t let them out at night unsupervised.

      • doxielver Says:

Thanks for the replies. I have 5 that I go out with and supervise but the owl have dived down close. I will probably start now taking 1 out at a time on the leash. Not sure the type of owl but he’s huge. Anyone know if they r year around birds?

      • Lynn Says:

that sounds like it could be a great horned (GHO)…they are really big…and they are vicious. Please be careful and keep them safe…take care.

  12. erindort Says:

  28. Jodimaher Says:

Amen Spencer made it back ! I am so happy for those two, they are just darling! Great job Austin ! Keep up the hard work! It will be over before you know it.
So I have to ask, have any of you ever heard of a bird called Cedar Wax Wing? We had baby birds (what I thought were Robins) all over the parking lot this morning and so of course I had to rescue them because I thought they were too small to be out of the nest. We’ve never had them nest in our trees before.

I did take them to a rehab facility close by so they could get food. They were on the ground and waiting for them were about 5 of the local neighborhood cats. I know momma will be sad that I scooped them up but the good news is that we do get to release them when they are ready back at home. My daughter and I will be picking fresh blackberries and delivering them to the South Sound Critter care facility for the babies.

Normally I would not interfere with nature as Carlos always says, but I could not watch these lil guys get scooped up by the cats. It all started with me finding the first one last night at twilight in the middle of the driveway. Little did I know this morning that I would find more. Wish me luck!
ps. around 5:30 this morning, one of our local barn owls flew overhead to wish me a nice day :)

    • CAequuslvr Says:

Jodi, you did a good thing. Sometimes Nature needs a helping hand. How wonderful that you will be the able to release them back at home.

  29. flukestail Says:

I agree with CA…you did a good thing. We wouldn’t leave human beings on the ground helpless and in danger. No reason to change that because they’re baby birds. We share this planet. You did a good thing, jodi.

  30. Elizabeth Mason Says:

Thanks for the info and the update. It’s lovely to hear that everything is going well for you and yours.

  31. jodimaher Says:

Thank you CA and Fluke ! Babies are doing great and loved all the blackberries that we delivered. I thought of McGee and Molly – how they have changed my life and made me a better person. I am fortunate enough to work from home 2 days a week so I will become a volunteer at the south sound critter care facility. ps. when I brought the berries, they let me tour the facility, they are rehabing a barn owl ;) xoxox love you guys !

  32. texasgrandmadarlene Says:

OMG! Was that a Molly t-shirt that Celo Greene was wearing on “The Voice” last night? He was sporting a white t-shirt with a beautiful barn owl on the front!
