Fearless, new young male owl (check out the spots)

While this young male owl may be called fearless for courting Molly, what I am actually talking about is Eric Blehm’s latest book, Fearless. It tells the story of a Seal Team Six member that gave his life for his country. A riveting story, especially if you are, or were a parent of a child that is, or had troubled teenage years.  Adam’s story will give you hope and faith. I recommend it. Yes, Donna and I read an advanced copy of the book and we loved it.   Below is a link to a youtube video. The book is set to be released May 22, but you can place early orders now. Please share the link with your friends if you think they would like it.

Have a great day!

Carlos, Donna and Austin

  1. Debbie (debiMac) Says:

Hmmm… I wonder if that’s one of her owlets moved back home to support her? ;) Excited to see what happens.

    • me Says:

Molly would not let one of her past owlets just move back into the box. The only way she would let another owl move into the box is if she choose him as a mate. All the past owlets are most likely paired up with another owl and rasing their own families.

      • Debbie (debiMac) Says:

Can’t you see the winky eye? I was just kidding! Of course it’s not one of her own babies. ;-)

  2. eyzrbrn Says:

    kewl. Doing a happy dance!!

  3. Genia Potter Says:

    Oh, tell more about Fearless!!

And thanks for the info on Eric’s newest book. I love his writing.

  4. imtresbien Says:

He’s very handsome! Molly chose well again and it’ll be exciting to see what the future brings them. What will you and Donna name him Carlos? He looks like a Mac to me, and it would be a bit of a nod to McGee.

The Seals are an amazing asset to our country, and I’m sure Eric’s book does them justice and more. Congratulations on your new venture Eric!

    • VeeTX Says:

Tres – Is there a photo of “Mac” that we can see? If Molly does have a suitor, it makes me happy. She’s too pretty an owl not to produce more beautiful owlets. Love, VeeTX

      • VeeTX Says:

Tres – never mind – I see his photo at the beginning of this post. I need to take a break – my mind is leaving me :-)

    • erindort Says:

Tres! I love your suggestion for the name. It is so fitting; yes, a nod to dear McGee is a great idea.

  5. VeeTX Says:

Carlos – I’Ve bookmarked the Web page for Eric’s new book and will be placing an order next pay day. Thanks for letting us know.

I didn’t know Molly had a suitor. We’d love to see a photo of him if he lands and sits on the playground or perch long enough for you to round up your camera.

Hope you and Donna and Austin are doing well! Love you and miss all of you. Enjoy your retirement, and send photos of your adventures!

  6. CAequuslvr Says:

Carlos, thanks for the exciting news.

Kudos to Eric on his latest book. I am going to make a suggestion for purchase at my local library (hopefully the library system will purchase many).

Molly’s new suitor is very handsome. McGee set some very high standards. We can only hope that he will pass all of the tests that Molly may give him.

  7. This is exciting and what McGee would want for Molly. I know I am putting human emotion into it but it makes me happier :) Thank you for the update. I don’t know if it is a child that moved back home (doubtful) or a new suitor but I hope we get to see a pic of the two of them together soon. If he is in the box, it looks as though she accepted him. I thank you so much for the update ! Looked at the book by Eric, such a touching story, I am ordering !

Lots of Love to the Royals & Miss Molly and new owl :)

  8. janie2 Says:

  14. pellora Says:

How nice. I was wondering if Molly would find or be found by a nice Barn Owlman. Good!

Does anyone know **who is the Great Wings owl?

  15. Michelle Says:

Oh yeah! Oh yeah! Oh yeah!

Please do keep us posted on any further developments. My heart just SINGS for Molly! I love seeing the pictures on the SPO site. It brightens my day. I leave it on constantly. I’m caring for a terminal child, and Molly was always the wind beneath my wings – good or bad.

    This is just the BEST!

Thank you once again for the update. You cannot possibly know how truly precious each nugget is to this weary mother.

    Hugs and love to all!

  16. VSue Says:

    OHHH hOWL adorable!!!!!

Is this a new friend for Molly or one of her young ones come to visit?

I just so adore this photo and have saved it to favorites.

Well, maybe some new egglets will be
    for us to see
More love and snuggles for Molly
Well, I will have to wait and see…

As soon as I get me some “Fun Money” that book is one I certainly want to get.

Thanks for the updates; always very much appreciated.

  17. LoveYourDNA Says:

  18. June Schafer Says:

Congrats to Eric on his new book! It will do well. Congrats to Molly on her new friend. He certainly is a handsome owl! Hope that since he is in her box that she has given her approval!
Thanks for the updates Carlos. Please keep them coming.
    Love to you and Donna!

  19. Ruth White (petenwell) Says:

I just want Molly happy and not alone. I have mixed feelings. I am still so sad about McGee. And not knowing what happened to him.

    • Debbie (debiMac) Says:

      Even though I agree, Ruth, I’m still relieved to see that Molly hopefully hasn’t given up after losing McGee. This has been a tough week in Syd and Mel’s owl box, so I needed to hear this good news today. Keeping my fingers crossed that it all works out and Molly becomes a mama once again. {{{HUGS}}}

      • Ruth White (petenwell) Says:

I did not hear what happened in Syd and Mel’s box. Thanks for keeping me on track. I do want Molly happy.

      • erindort Says:

Right, Ruth and Debbie!! I surley do agree with you both.
I want more happiness in Molly’s life, and I am relieved to see the suitor (Mac?) Anyway I have heard that sometimes widowed barn owls willl fly to exhaustion looking for their mate or just grieving; then they also die. Does anyone know if that is fact ot fiction?
(I didn’t mention it before Mac came along because it was just too sad at the time.)

  20. Hi Carlos, has this gentowlman asked you for your approval yet if it is the case of him wanting to court Molly? He is very handsome! He looks like he has had a few meals…..he is a little thick as they say! I am so excited and can’t wait to see how Molly feels about Fearless if it isn’t one of her kidz from her first or second clutch . Please keep us informed with some pics or a video maybe of them together. We want to see Molly happy and content.
Congrats goes out to Eric Blehm on his new book, we are proud of him!
Thanks for letting us know about a possible new episode in our Molly’s life.

    Sending Love from Colorado…

March 30, 2011 – We Are On The Road

The delayed Royal Retirement Adventures trip to Canada began this time last year, with a stop off in Bakersfield to visit with Carlos’ Mom and sister, before continuing on northward! Get ready for some great photos in the upcoming posts from last year.

  40. PegRod Says:

What a pleasure to read all the comments when Carlos adds a new post with such good news!

Fearless, a true story, I am certain will be another awesome book, carefully researched, crafted and written with compassion and understanding by Eric Blehm – Congratulations!

Thank you Eric, for your commitment to share inspiring true stories in a way that only you can do!

Of course, the Molly Books collection are all masterpieces. In addition, I particularly loved the poetic writing of the true story in another of Eric’s prize winning books, The Last Season, and highly recommend it not only for the story, but for the descriptions of nature.

Mr. Fearless, welcome to our Owl Box world – you have gotten your first headline with photo! If you stay awhile, we might just get to know you better. Molly may be thinking, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going!”

    Thank you, Carlos!

On another note, I wonder if Austin Faure is broadcasting any of the BMX races at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA, this weekend. There is of local news coverage as the contestants prepare for the 2012 London Olympic Summer Games this fall. I never really knew what BMX was before Austin’s Series of Four broadcasts, which I watched last year.

    Thank you Austin!

    Story Time with Zorro
    includes some tributes to McGee

    March 29, 2012 – VacaChat 160

Usually the stories are read on Sundays, but this week it was read on a Thursday evening. Of course, like The Owl Box recordings, you can look back for the past two years and listen to all the recordings! The story enactment with sound effects usually begins around 6:30 pm, after Zorro the mouse puppet warms up with some voice exercises, and a change of costumes, and locates the computer file!

Great story, great show – we love you Molly and McGee – what was will always be!

    • erindort Says:

      Peg, hi!!
It was a fun story, wasn’t it? And you were one of the writers, I believe?

      • PegRod Says:

erindort, I love your name whenever I see it in comments or on a group card!

Yes, I am one of the MOD volunteers who usually shows up to write under DotRot’s leadership and creative inspiration on Sunday afternoons at 3 pm Pacific time on VacaChat. It is a highlight of my week to have continuing fun with MODs and VacaVriends! Dot has also saved all the Story Time pdfs on her new site named “Chatterchopz.com”. First Clutch MODs will remember that Chatterchopz was our official Owl Box Mascot, Princess, and has continued as an official Moderator in some Ustream live chatrooms!

  42. Congrats to Eric and to Molly! I agree with the poster who thought to name the new guy Mac. It would be a nice fit and a rememberance for McGee.

  43. Such good news for everybody! Thanks, Carlos!

  44. Breezy Says:

What a handsome fella Molly has chosen (hopefully!) My personal belief is that all spirits live on, and I’d like to think that McGee is watching over his beloved Molly and led this new mate to her.Thank you again, Carlos, Donna, and Austin, for bringing Molly and McGee to the world. I have learned so much about these wonderful creatures and M&M will always be my first owl loves.
On another note, my niece and her husband are both Master Chief Petty Officers in the Navy and both have done extensive training with the Seals. We owe more to these dedicated freedom fighters than we will ever know. I will be ordering a copy of Eric’s new book for them. He is a wonderful writer.
Like everyone else here, I eagerly look forward to the next update on Molly.
    Warm Regards,

This is a fascinating post from Carlos about a visit to a vineyard in Lodi, California on their way towards the final destination in Canada (location to be revealed later!). If you read the comments from last year, there is a link and a lot to learn about the symbiotic relationship between barn owl families nesting in boxes and rodent control in vineyards!

The RV had a misadventure, but look where it led the Royal Couple – Carlos can really tell a story so you believe you are right there with them! No photos, but read and take a little trip!

April 3, 2011 – Mount Shasta and Into Oregon

Last year, readers of Molly’s Blog were treated to travel photos along with beautiful descriptions from moments during the Royal Retirement Adventure. The Royal RV, parked during M&M’s First and Second Clutch in San Marcos in the garage, was now heading towards a final destination in points north in Canada. I will post the first paragraph with Carlos’ reflections. Click the link to read more!

“The trip from Lodi to Redding was a nice uneventful drive. This is a great time to be traveling by motor home as the valleys are green and the skies are blue. The area has had a lot of rain so the rivers and the streams are raging and some fields are flooded but mostly the scenery in the delta is a canvas of mixed greens, with patches of mustard weed yellow, touches of lupine blues and purples, all accented with spots of California golden poppies next to pooling water reflecting wind swept clouds moving to the rhythm of the thumping RV tires as they play the melody of the highway in tune with the expansion joints in the road.”

Ahhhhh, you could almost paint a watercolor with that great description! I feel as if I could hear the sights and sounds from our KOWL host!

Thank you Carlos and Donna Royal for sharing your life with us in word and deed.

Last night, Wabbit Wrangler Roy (Papa) delivered his 200th rabbit treat to owlets Ellie, Clark and Dee. The three young owlets will still be in and around the box for awhile, so the next goal is 250! This statistic does not include other rodentia (mousie sliders), nor Mama Dale’s contributions to this growing bunch. Roy sounds like someone else we know (Carlos Royal), as he breaks new records!

    April Fools’ Day 2012 Special

In this most recent episode on Ustream, John “VacaDude” shares a photoshopped screenshot of an owletgiganticus as his April Fools’ gift to fans! In another screenshot, you will see Mama Sydney and owlets Maggie and Boomer cuddling in the Oceanside, CA Owl Box, also found on Ustream. Papa Mel spends days outside the box, guarding during the daylight hours, and hunting during the nights. Remember Mel? Vaca also shares a split scene photo of Mel in his younger years compared to an image of Napolean – those who followed the Oceanside Owl Box might remember that errant feather was nicknamed “Nemo”.

Coincidentally, the San Francisco Silent Film Festival just finished presenting the restored 1927 Napolean silent film masterpiece by Abel Gance at the historic Paramount Theater in Oakland, CA – John and his wife saw this 5 and 1/2 hour movie and shares photos and his review in this episode as well as in the previous Thursday episode.

Story Time with Zorro on the April Fools’ Day theme provides some silliness, drama, love and more, and finishes with great lessons for life in the conclusions created by Story Time writing leader, DotRot!

Thank you for the continuing fun, VacaDude – all inspired by The Owl Box of San Marcos, CA, thanks to Molly and McGee and families, and to Carlos and Donna and Austin, and to all the MODs who keep the dream alive!

    April 5, 2011 – Killing Time

The first thing you see when you click on this link is a gorgeous photo of something unexpected, a thistle! The caption reads, “Just interesting” and indeed, as seen through Carlos’ camera lense, it is! I recently have become a fan of “1 Giant Leap”, a UK concept band/media project from about 10 years ago which won many music awards for how it blended music recorded and blended on an around-the-world journey. The creators also interviewed many “un”common people, and I love all the lessons on life. In discussing the theme of “Inspiration”, one person reflects that the artist (potentiallly within all of us) is more aware of the world around and sees more, feels more, notices the details, finds the beauty in what many take for granted …. Carlos Royal is an amazing artist, as shown through his sensitivity to capturing just the right moment in nature to teach us a visual lesson, and the way he can tell a story and draw visual images with his words! The entry title, “Killing Time” is just a common expression – you just might feel like Carlos is brings the “life” back to what might otherwise seem like ordinary. The comments from readers are always a joy to read!

The chill in the air does not suppress the blossoming cherry trees, which are shown in two photo!s That’s right, Carlos and Donna were headed northward to Canada.

The artistic eye of Carlos captures a photo of a “Leaky Seal” on his RV tire – read his story to find out more. That photo is a study in artistic composition. Look at the details!

Carlos takes the time to relate lots of travel stories in this blog entry. You just might feel the chill in the air and smell the blossoms as you read his descriptive post! Here is one small excerpt:

“We have seen some daffodils here in Oregon but hope to see many more in Washington. Timing should be perfect since they have the 78th Annual Daffodil Festival and Parade this weekend in Tacoma and Puyallup.”

Hmmmm – read more history here.

Molly and McGee, and all of us, are proud and happy to be part of this Owl Box family!

    Ustream Owl Box Update
    Chula Vista, CA

This morning, the owlets are peeking through the invisible door of the Owl Box onto a gorgeous scene and a great weather forecast! Moderator TwoOwlWings posted this link to Couleedam and LoneStar’s screenshot page, great MODs and moderators, one and all!

1-1-12 123 pm Allopreening - Dale preening Roy - watch the eyes honey

This view allows you to see all the thumbnails at once, which is the quick way to see time in capsule. One photo that jumps out at me is one of owlets Ellie, Clark and Dee seemingly with one body and three heads. One can imagine that the first time someone saw a vision like this, with heads bobbling and a protective hissing, they imagined “Monster!” (especially when peering out of a cave in a cliff), when in fact, our beloved barn owlets are just pure sweethearts!

Reports – TwoOwlWingz: How old are the Hero’s today? Ellie is 48 days, Clark is 46 days and Dee is 42 days old. Moderator dkowen: Just the Factz Fling & Fly Report© Total 9: As the Heroes continue to grow, Wrangler Roy & Daring Dale feed them hearty meals of 4 rabbits, 1 gopher and 4 slider mice. Tummies full!

For those in observance – Happy Easter/Passover/Sunday to all!

It took me until Molly and McGee’s Second Clutch of owlets, to find the front page of Molly’s Box Blog on WordPress! The front page has the daily weather report and the Flag Counter, items which are now found on the other Ustream Owl Box websites as well, and provide valuable or at least interesting information.

Molly will have a gorgeous day today in San Marcos, California, either in the box or outside in a comfortable roosting location in a Royal Palm tree or elsewhere, with temperatures in the high 70s (F) under mostly sunny skies! Over at the Chula Vista CA Owl Box on Ustream, at least one of the owlets, Clark, has stuck his head through the invisible door as the fuzzy down is rapidly being replaced with gorgeous barn owl feathers! They grow up so fast!

Sunrise is now at 6:26 am PDT and sunset at 7:14 pm PDT in Southern California. PDT is Pacific Daylight Time, which many now call “Molly Time” and most MODs understand just that!

    The Royal Gardens
    San Marcos, California

It is going to be another beautiful day for Molly in San Marcos, California, with temperatures again in the comfortable 70s under mostly sunny skies! I imagine that in the Royal Gardens around The Owl Box, roses are blooming as well as all the other flowers and fruit trees. In this inland area all of wildlife is feeling the spring air, and all the species of birds (at least 60 different kinds), and the desert cottontails, sagebrush lizards, pocket gophers and voles, etc. are procreating. And, if Carlos and Donna are not travelling too much, some springtime planting of the Royal Vegetable Garden has taken place. New readers, who would like to see the Owl Box surrounds, can look at two videos posted on this site. Click on the link below, and scroll down to about the 6th or 7th videos – of course, you might just want to look at all the videos!

At the beginning of this year, an article about barn owl populations in the United Kingdom provided hope for the future of barn owls, and the environment in general, in the UK!

Guess where Carlos and Donna were this time last year! lol Click on the link to find out the specifics and enjoy some more tales and tribulations of travelling across the border from the USA to Canada.

Also, get ready in the next weeks for a series of fabulous upcoming photos and a journaling by Carlos of their trip into parts northward. This is a chance to vacation vicariously with the Royal couple as they explore some beautiful sites around Vancouver. Carlos shares their adventures, “road blocks”, and misadventures. Hmmmm … sounds a little like “The Amazing Race”!

While you are waiting for the next posting about the 2011 RV trip, you might want to brush up on a little geography and history about Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada, You can skim over this entry on Wikipedia, but always double check the facts, like getting a second opinion from another physician when it comes to your health! By the way, I didn’t know that Montreal, Canada (east) was also an island!

As far as the weather in San Marcos, CA today in 2012 (lol), it will be cooler and partly cloudy, in the upper 60’s (F) during the day and upper 40s (F) during the moonlit nights, not too cold for the critters to continue their nightly routines, while Molly and family continue their rodentia retrievals.

April 11, 2011 – Rainy Day Funny Story

Last year at this time, Carlos and Donna had arrived at their vacation destination of Vancouver, Canada. The photographs show no rain, so you can enjoy a series of sunny shots, along with some very funny tales involving currency and how what one considers to be the simple things in life, aren’t always so easy in a foreign country, even Canada!

Carlos shares some old memories, one being the fact that he and Donna considered living in Canada at one point, but settled in Southern California instead. Thanks to that move, the Royal future held something for all of us! It meandered and progressed until that golden moment when Donna suggested to Carlos that he build what would become a prototype for The Owl Box of San Marcos, CA! His first attempt at owl box construction led to a call to Tom Stephan, a falconer and owl box expert builder, and Tom’s box was the final installation! The FAQ section found on this Molly’s Box WordPress site explains more details.

Today in 2011, guess what? The headline is the same! It is a very rainy day in San Marcos, CA, and who knows what funny stories might be told today, somewhere! The daylight hours are lengthening, with sunrise now at 6:22 am and sunset at 7:16 pm Molly Time! Here is the forecast from one site (another one calls for thunder storms):

“Rain in the morning…Then showers likely in the afternoon. Highs 55 to 60 in the western valleys to 50 to 55 near the foothills. Areas of winds south 15 mph with gusts to 25 mph becoming west with gusts to 30 mph in the afternoon.”

Well – April Showers Bring May Flowers!

    April 14, 2011 – Butchart’s Gardens

Last year, on April 12th, Carlos was busy writing his travel journal, but it took a couple more days to post and include the adventures from the 13th as well. Here is a take home quiz:

    1. How many photos did Carlos post on April 14, 2011?

    2. What is the name of the two gardens the Royals visited?

    3. What famous portrait did they dine under?

    4. Why was Donna thinking about “yarn” – was she going to weave her own story?

    5. What is Molly’s Motto?

    6. What is your favorite tale from this posting?

If you can answer question #6 you get an A+ for Appreciation! If you can add your own 5 questions on this blog, you accumulate 5 gold stars for having a little fun and being part of it, Gee!

Today, on April 12th in San Marcos, CA, the rain has moved on towards Spain! lol Here is one forecast for San Marcos:

“Partly cloudy. Slight chance of showers early this morning. Highs 59 to 64 in the western valleys to 54 to 59 near the foothills. Light winds becoming west 15 mph with gusts to 25 mph in the afternoon. Chance of measurable precipitation 20 percent.”

    • erindort Says:

Oh, yes. That was one of Carlos’s best posts!
When is an RV not an RV? — loved that part!

      • PegRod Says:

erindort – now that is a good question, “When is an RV not an RV?” Carlos has his own answer, based on this travel experience! He says:

“Remember the boarder-crossing incident where I decided our big rig bus RV was more like a bus than a car so I chose the bus lane and got punished. Well, I had to chuckle as we approached the ferry in our car there was this big sign. “RVs use bus lane.” Okay, I am getting this now. On the highway an RV is a truck, on the border it’s a car and on the ferry we it’s a bus and for taxes it is a second home.”

From this answer, I would imagine the answer to “When is an RV an RV?” It’s when you by it off the RV lot!” Those Recreational Vehicles provide a lot more than just recreation!

    Ustream Owl Box Update

With a quick peek into live chat, it appears that one of the owlets stepped out last night for the first time!

Moderator LacyRoze reports: Just the Factz Fling & Fly Report© Total 5: Through another breezy night Dale & Roy joined forces to haul in 3 rabbits, 1 rat, 1 rodent. Hero stepped out at 11:48pm PDT!

EmmieJan took and shares some screenshots of the big event! The owlet/bunny fuzz is quickly being completely replaced with gorgeous barn owlet feathers. The youngest owlet, Dee, has a distinctive darker face as well as more fuzz, so it was either Ellie or Clark (as a group, these owlets are called the Heroes) whose talons were testing, tapping, and finally settling down securely for some fun-filled exploratory “porchabout” moments!

Any MODs watching the Owlceanside Owl Box on Ustream can provide some brief updates for us on Molly’s Blog! I know that Maggie and Boomer, the owlets of Syd and Mel, are younger than the Chula Vista clutch. No videos, since they crash mobile devices.

Molly and McGee, forever in our hearts! Molly, we imagine that you are alive and well and still living in the Royal Gardens of San Marcos, CA, either enjoying a Staycation, living in a MamaOwl-in-law abode, and/or teaching your grandowlets some of your fine flying and hunting techniques.

  78. PegRod Says:

“Nobody can be in good health if he does not have all the time fresh air, sunshine, and good water.”
    —Chief Flying Hawk

Hawk, owl or human, you might want to see if the weather is nice enough to spend some time outside. If not, you might open the window and look outside and admire nature. Or, if not that, we know that on the internet Ustream has many windows to sights unseen before now. Just open to watch and contemplate/meditate kaleidoscopic or “periscope up” views of nature all over the world! Or, like Molly, perhaps just close your eyes and daydream of whatever you might imagine (out of necessity, Molly is always aware of her surroundings in case a predator stops by)!

Oops, just looked at the weather forecast for San Marcos, CA – With today’s forecast, Molly just might stay in The Owl Box in the Royal Gardens, so the raindrops do not keep falling on her head, while the tree branches dance the Tarantella with thunderous background symphonies!

“Friday… Rain and chance of thunderstorms. Rain may be heavy at Times. Highs 58 to 63 in the western valleys to 51 to 56 near the foothills. Areas of winds southwest 15 to 25 mph. Gusts to 30 mph…Becoming 45 mph in the afternoon.”

Molly, I do hope that you decided to spend some time in The Owl Box in the Royal Gardens! Oh, what a night it was! But, looking in on the barn owlets on Ustream at the Chula Vista, CA box, they look fine, even though their box was rockin and rollin all night. Forget the Tarantella, it was Heavy Metal!

One weather forecast for this weekend and on in San Marcos, CA shows great improvements!

“Saturday… Partly cloudy with scattered showers. Highs 54 to 59 in the western valleys to 48 to 53 near the foothills. Areas of winds west 15 to 20 mph. Gusts to 35 mph…Becoming 30 mph in the afternoon. Chance of measurable precipitation 50 percent.

Sunday… Mostly sunny. Warmer. Highs 64 to 69 in the western valleys to 60 to 65 near the foothills. Light winds.

Monday… Mostly sunny. Warmer. Highs 72 to 77. Light winds.”

    April 16, 2011 – China Town

Last year, on the 16th, Carlos posted pages and photographs from his ongoing retirement adventures in Vancouver, Canada, with Donna. This entry included April 14th, 15th, and 16th. So, I am providing that link today for you to get started!

You will see photographs Carlos took while visiting the Bloedel Floral Conservatory in Vancouver, Canada, which is an indoor climate-controlled garden of flowers and tropical birds. That makes for three stops, so far, in famous gardens found in Vancouver – VanDusen Gardens, Butchart Gardens, and Bloedel Floral Conservatory (On the 16th, see what happens by reading further in the post from last year).

Carlos includes a photo of a maginificent view of snow-covered mountains as seen from their dining experience at Bloedel – you can also almost taste his meal of “Duck 2 Ways” – read on and enjoy!

One remark for today, April 15th! Happy Birthday to Norma Noral Royal, Carlos’ mother, who turns 97 today, if I am not mistaken. MODs can thank Norma for The Owl Box live broadcast, since Carlos wanted to share it with her, the whole reason he selected Ustream with help from his grandson, Austin, in the beginning! The reason I know his mother’s age and name is from Carlos Royal’s post in the blog, along with the dedication to his mother in the coffee table book of photographs from the second clutch, entitled “The Second Clutch: Molly & McGee”! This is a magnificent compilation of the best of the best photos he took, beautifully arranged and edited by Eric Blehm and company. Right now, very few copies remain – a collector’s item for certain.

Yes, A Very Happy Birthday to you, Norma!

This morning well-loved MOD and moderator tresbien was in the live chat room and provided the report when I peeked in: Just the Factz Fling & Fly Report© Total 6. Roy & Dale set a trend with a variety of tasty treats: 1 rabbit, 1 vole, 1 mouse, 3 sliders. Ellie delights all with brief forays to the porch.” Tresbien also reminds viewers, ” Owlets take first step out of the nest at 49-60 days. Fly at 60-70 days. They are considered adult owls at 80 days.”

These owlets still have remains of “mohawks” and “fluffy tutus”, but are all getting close to spending their nights outside, more and more. This is a fun time to watch in their life-cycle, and this owl box provides both an inside and outside view combined with live chat if you ask a moderator for that special site link.

It is a chilly morning, but the forecasts for this area and for San Marcos are for warming trends and clear skies! Chula Vista is considered on the coast, while San Marcos is further north and inland. This forecast for Chula Vista shows you what a difference your location makes, when you are next to the Grand Pacific Ocean!

“Monday… Partly cloudy in the morning…Becoming mostly sunny. Warmer. Highs 63 to 68 near the coast to 70 to 75 inland. Light winds. – Tuesday… Mostly sunny. Highs 66 to 71 near the coast to 73 to 78 inland. Light winds.”

    April 18, 2011 – Sun Run

It was posted on the 18th, but on this day last year, April 17th, Carlos and Donna were on their way to buy some more delicious almond croissants when another adventure occurred! I will post just a small portion here as a teaser. Click on the link to read the whole entertaining story which takes place in Vancouver, Canada!

Excerpt from Carlos, “It was a beautiful morning with bright blue skies and white puffy clouds as we crossed the Lion’s Gate Bridge with basically no traffic, but then as we approached downtown the traffic stopped. We had seen flags flying for the past week promoting Sun Run Day but we had not given it much thought until we were boxed in and could see people in running gear coming from every direction to participate in the 10k run.”

You might give a chuckle and remember that phrase, “The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry” (one of the translations of a line of a poem “To A Mouse” written by Robert Burns in 1785 in the Scottish language – Scot). Zorro, the infamous mouse that escaped from Molly’s Owl Box, lives on as a character in VacaChat on Ustream and has a Poetry Time reading on Thursday nights and Story Time reading on Sunday nights at 6 pm Molly Time! He read that poem in the original language one night – a real tongue twister!

Speaking of “Sun Run”, and coming back to 2012, there will be gorgeous weather all week for Molly and family in San Marcos, CA, with lots of sun, warmth and springtime exhuberance from flora and fauna alike!

  89. Sandra Younger Says:

Hello Molly fans. Just wanted to let you know that the owl couple who found our recently installed owl box–inspired by Molly and McGee of course–have begun to lay eggs. We can’t provide a video stream, but I’ve created a Facebook page and will post regular photo updates as this new owl family grows. If you’re interested, check it out at http://www.facebook.com/BarnOwlsBonnieAndClyde

  90. Owl Lovers Says:

Not sure if Carlos or anyone responds to these, but I thought I’d try. Our nesting owl box was recently invaded by bees and we did our best to remove them (humanely with help of a beekeeper). Mama Owl left the box due to the bees but returned to her two owlets in the evening. All was fine. The bees began swarming again the next morning and again, we had them removed. Mama returned.

Now a week later, bees have returned, and sadly, I didn’t notice the swarm until later in the day and the two owlets were dead on the ground. Very sad. I believe there are two more eggs in the box, but mama definitely abandoned the box. Beekeeper is coming back tonight to remove the bees but I feel the bees will just keep returning. Not sure what to do and am very sad for the loss of our two owlets who just yesterday were doing fine.

Anyone have any helpful advice. Sad in Elfin Forest.

    • carlosroyal Says:

Once bees move into an owl box it is hard to get rid of them because they leave a residue in the box so the bees keep coming back. The number one destroyer of owl boxes are bee invasions. Usually, you have to replace the box. There are some products you can treat your new owl box with that helps keep the bees out. I think it is called bee-gone or something similar.

      • Owl Lovers Says:

Thanks Carlos. I have the beekeeper coming this morning (he couldn’t make it last night). The papa owl came by last night calling out to mama owl and was circling the property to no avail. When I finally do get into the box, I’ll see if the remaining 2 eggs are still there. There is a chance they have survived even without the mother’s warmth overnight (I read somewhere that they can last 24 hours and still hatch). I will probably call Project Wildlife or something. I may place the infested owl box in a place accessible to the bees, so they can inhabit this instead of the new owl box which I will put up shortly. My kids are definitely sad about the death of the little owlets, but I guess they are learning about nature.

    Ustream Owl Box Update
    Chula Vista, CA

Checking on whether Roy the Wabbit Wrangler had achieved his next goal of 250 wabbits for their Second Clutch, I see that tonight will be the big night!

Moderator LacyRoze: Just the Factz Fling & Fly Report© Total 5: A night of true fling & fly deliveries of 3 hearty rabbits and 2 gophers. Clark and Ellie both looked for deliveries on the porch.

Viewers are fascinated with youngest owlet named Dee, who has darker feathers on her face and it appeared darker pigment on her legs, although she came from the same clutch of Mama Dale and Papa Roy’s second clutch eggs. Speculation is that perhaps they are related in some way to the “black” barn owl known as Betty, who stopped by the box last year when Roy first moved in. This could be a good lesson on genetics and inheritance!

During the day, the coloring differences are prominent, but with the infrared light from the nightcam, it is harder to distinguish! Look at this night photo taken by MOD Lonestar!

Now look at this daytime photo by LoneStar.

    Gee, this is fun!

    • PegRod Says:

The Lucy and Ricky Owl Box is back on Ustream with their second clutch. These young owlets, named Sunshine (hatched Apr 10th), Mickey (Apr 12th), and Farina (Apr 15th), hatched recently for those who are searching for young ones to watch – they all appear to be healthy and happy!

  92. Carlos, everything ok ? you know me, I have worrywarts everywhere ! I hope all is well.

Roy reached the landmark 250 rabbits! In the meantime, it appears that youngest owlet, Dee, is still hanging on to the owl box door step and has not taken, what might feel like, 1 Giant Leap to the front porch.

Remember rocketowlet Austin, of Molly and McGee’s First Clutch? His first venture out of The Owl Box bypassed the porch as he rocketed out to the playground! I will look for a recording!

Usually Carlos gets a mention in every story time! Check out last Sunday’s Story Time reading where the Virtual Owlets named Vinky and Vobble consider getting jobs so they can retire like Carlos! Stories, read by puppet Zorro, usually start halfway through the shows.

    Ustream Owl Box Update
    Chula Vista, CA

Watching barn owls in owl boxes on Ustream, like MODs did with Molly & McGee, can provide the magic of watching young “human” children growing up and successfully maturing through the stages of development. Add to that the opportunity to watch the barn owl parents and their behavior and interactions in and around the owl box, and one is also provided a model for a healthy and happy family! That’s not only “Entertainment” but can also provide some “Enlightenment”!

Over at the Chula Vista, CA Owl Box, Roy & Dale’s owlets are maturing quickly. Live chat modeator LacyRoze provided this information today: How old are our heroe’s today? Ellie is 62 days, Clark is 60 days and Dee is 56 days old. – Just the Factz Fling & Fly Report© Total 4: Wrangler Roy & Daring Dale deliver the good stuff 2 rabbits and 2 gophers, while Ellie & Clark continue to show Dee how fun it is to flap on the porch!

With all these barn owl families, we are looking forward to big Mother’s Day celebrations for the Tyto Alba species this year (May 13th)! Will those Mama Owls get breakfast in bed? Probably not, but Papa Owl might suggest to their fledging owlets, “Maybe you could try to get your own breakfast and let Mama sleep in!”

Molly, we love you (hearts and hugs)!
