Austin Update

February 13, 2012

Austin's Final Illustrator Poster Project

Austin has just completed Term II or 30 weeks of school with perfect attendance. He has been shooting for perfect grades also but didn’t quite make it with one “B+”. According to Austin he should have gotten an “A” but you know how some teachers grade.  His latest project was an 8.5 hour BMX broadcast without any glitches. To check it out go to www.SmallTimeLive.com  where you can see some of the replays of the event. You don’t have to watch all 8.5 hours.

Austin started Term III this week with his first course being Web Design where he plans to build a public portfolio of his work.

    February 16, 2011 – Caleigh Still Looking
    https://mollysbox.wordpress.com/2011/02/16/caleigh-still-looking/

Carlos treated fans to one of his beautifully framed photos of Royal Garden resident, Caleigh, the kestrel, perched on a tree top, looking for her mate. MODs will always remember that the kestrel is Donna’s favorite, but we also know that Molly and other “un”common barn owls are now part of her nuclear, or at least, extended Royal Family! If Caleigh had laid a clutch, we would have gotten to see them grow up, but alas, it was not meant to be last year. I always spelled it “Callie” for some reason (having heard the name first before seeing it spelled out) and now I understand why some called owlet, “Wesley” also “Wesleigh”, beside attributing a female gender.

Maybe this is Caleigh’s year for a Royal Garden addition!

Reflections, revealing history, and a remarkable photograph by a remarkable host capturing a private moment of a remarkable McGee! If you read this post you will see that McGee might have been outside preening and doing some owl yoga for Carlos, but Molly was inside The Owl Box getting cozy for the fertile days ahead.

  35. A Friend of M&M Says:

Good for Austin! What a great grandpa to be so present in grandson’s life. He is very fortunate to have such a great grandpa and grandma. He will go far~ Good to hear from the Royal family. Hope you are enjoying your travels.

  36. Colleen Poor Says:

It’s always good to hear news about the Royal clan :-) Contratulations to Austin and not to worry about that B+. Overall all the projects and such that he’s doing will be what makes up his portfolio and that is what a future employer will really be looking at. Carlos, don’t work too hard in your “retirement” ;-) I know you and Donna are enjoying yourselves and we do appreciate the updates on M & M and the Royals. Thanks!

Welcome owlet, Ellie (2/19 at 3:38 am PST)! Dale is having a snack while her very first owlet of her second Clutch listens on – a very healthy looking fluffy ball of love! Photo link shared in chat by talented MOD tresbien!

Waiting for hatch number 2 in Chula Vista is fun as chatters gather like they did for Molly’s clutches. Poet Florida Skye created this inspiration today, as fans wait:

8:06 FloridaSkye: Fluff and shred, fluff and shred. Make the babies a soft bed. Dale knows just what she must do To prepare her nest for Baby 2.

Such love! Roy has brought almost 60 desert cottontail rabbits so far this breeding season – maybe more!

    • PegRod Says:

The “Hero” theme continues as owlet #2 hatched last evening at an hour worthy of Superman. Clark’s official hatch time is February 21, 2012 at 6:21 pm. Look at all those 2’s and 1’s!

Dudley’s Distant Cousin – For those wondering if the last egg hatched, it looks like it will not, and has been dubbed “Bruce”. Bruce usually is draped in a cuddling hug by one or more of the other owlets and Dale keeps it rotating, while Roy has taken a talon temperature of the egg a few times. Twoclubs got a great shot of a three-owlet huddle with Bruce while Dale was out on a flyabout. Last night Roy brought in 4 rabbitz and is up to about 80 for this breeding season’s clutch.

    February 26, 2011 – Screeching
    https://mollysbox.wordpress.com/2011/02/26/screeching/

This post begins with a great photo of a remarkable backside profile of Roark, the famous red-shouldered hawk, followed by an entertaining description of activities and events in the Royal Gardens, including this true tale:

Carlos recounts, “Just about bedtime we were startled to hear an owl screeching and clacking so loud that we could hear it inside the house with the TV on. I jumped up and ran outside just in time to see an opossum high tailing it out of the yard with Molly sitting on the fence letting him know he was not welcome.”

Awwww, those were the days – so much fun (maybe not for the opposum aka possum)! But there is much action in many Ustream owl boxes to enjoy in 2012. Opossums are actually great for gardens, and in Southern California garden snails eat the new growth and destroy the blossoms. This is an interesting article:
    http://www.latimes.com/features/la-hm-opossum28jun28,0,4090916.story

Thank you Carlos and Donna Royal for all these great memories!

February 27, 2011 – McGee in Palm Tree
    https://mollysbox.wordpress.com/2011/02/27/mcgee-in-palm-tree-2/

“McGee in Palm Tree” is a great photo, followed by the February featured star Roark, and an unusal and lovely capture of Mockz on a fence post in the rain. Mockz is the famous and beloved Royal Garden mockingbird who often guards the owl box, and entertains the barn owls (while they doze during the day) with myriad of bird songs and calls, including imitations of their very own barn owl sounds (like looking at yourself in the mirror)!

Carlos gives fans some updates and begins with, “Not a lot of excitement last night or at least no squawking and screeching like the night before, but Austin did come over to try out his camcorder in low light and captured McGee coming and going a couple of times.” read on for more!

Molly’s spirit of participation and community lives on with a “Gee, this is fun, and we are a part of it!” – many fans keep The Owl Box present in their hearts and minds and can remember Austin “way back when….” in his high school days!

Also, I just noticed that “Gee” is part of the name “McGee”! Am I dreaming? Molly, you are so clever with your motto!

    February 28, 2011 – McGee
    https://mollysbox.wordpress.com/2011/02/28/mcgee-3/

This post by Carlos includes a picture window into the night of McGee, and two special photos of Caleigh the kestrel, one with her eating a treat on the bluebird box roof.

There is a link to a great article in the Sacramento Bee, about the award winning and beloved children’s book by Eric Blehm. McGee is still wondering why the book was entitled “Molly the Owl”, when “McGee the Owl” tickles his fancy feathers. I imagine McGee – “Well, I did get a bookmark”. he remembers, …”and some mugs, shirts and well, I guess a lot of other attention!”
    http://mollytheowlbooks.com/store/molly-the-owl-bookmarks-classroom-pack.html

“And, I am so charming as well as regally handsome”, McGee ponders, “….that female two-leggers are even wearing my heart near their own heart!”
    http://www.cafepress.com/mollytheowl.600473871

From Carlos, we finally heard those magic words,”Third Clutch”!

    Yippee!

PegRod—Just wanted to say again that I am so appreciative for all of your updates & “look backs”. It is such a treat. You are keeping the spirit of M&M alive.
I agree, thanks to all of the picture takers. It so enriches the experience for all of us owl watchers.

    • PegRod Says:

CAequuslver – your words are appreciated as well as all those others who post their ideas/comments/poetry to keep our dream and history alive! Sometimes I think that I should just stop, but my heart keeps calling me back!

    Leap Year 2012
A new day for The Owl Box

February 29th is a date you will not find in the archives or history of The Owl Box of San Marcos, California! At least, no recorded history online.

Actually, Carlos had The Owl Box installed two years prior to the stormy arrival of Molly and McGee into the box in January 2010. The section on “FAQ” has a little history of the actual structure of the owl box!
    https://mollysbox.wordpress.com/all-faqs/the-owl-box-faqs/

Leap Year has the folk tradition in some countries where any females may propose marriage to a male (…this reminds me of a tradtion in some places in the US and Canada – made famous by cartoon Li’l Abner – Sadie Hawkins Day).

So, any female one-year-old barn owls ready to settle down, pick your mate well and propose today – for you will be together for a lifetime!

March 1, 2011 – Molly the Owl Book Review
    https://mollysbox.wordpress.com/2011/03/01/molly-the-owl-book-review-sacramento-bee/

For all those who wonder why they keep old papers in the attic or basement or in closets around the world, well, this is a good reason to keep files in your computer! The link to the Sacramento Bee article did not work from my previous post, and thankfully, Carlos copied the article last year and posted it here, so we can enjoy reading the praises!

Time to stock up on your copies of Molly the Owl, send some to your friends and family, to local schools and libraries and spread the good news! Or just ask Eric Blehm to donate this heartwarming well-told true story with great lessons for life to a good cause – like his brother-in-law’s overseas orphanage donations. Disabled wounded warriors might find some healing here, too.

“Gee this is fun, and we are a part of it” – that is, if we choose to be!

    Pay it forward ….

  47. Jay Says:

Any current word on Molly and McGee? There’s been no update for weeks. Are they in the box these days? Many of us would like to know please, please, please.

  48. CAequuslvr Says:

PegRod–Oh no!!! Please continue with your wonderful posts. I am sure I am not the only one who would be bereft to no longer have your wonderful info.

Carlos–I too implore you to give us a M&M update.
