Molly and McGee Checking Calendar

Molly and McGee in the planning stage

Let me know when it is time

We are back from our 50th Wedding Anniversary Cruise but plan to be taking off again soon. Of course, we had to check on Molly and McGee. They continue to visit the owl box but seem to be checking their 2012 Molly Calendar to see if it is time to start their next family. Family planning is a big deal according to The Book of Owls. If you were watching back in 2010, (that seems like such a long time ago) they did not get started until early February with Molly laying her first egg February 13, 2010. Matting starts in earnest about 10 to 15 days before the first egg shows up.

We hope you had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, Donna and I did. Basically, we just unplugged and kicked back while sailing the Caribbean. If you have ever been on a cruise then you know it is good for about 10 pounds. The food was fabulous! The service too, coming back to reality is a shock when you get up that first morning after a cruise and find breakfast is not served and you have to make your own bed. You immediately think, “Can I go back?”

No, it is time for a reality check. Fire up the computer, over 527 emails. Do I read them or just delete? That is too big a decision for right now, I need a cup of Mate Tea. The word is it will clear out the cobwebs and sharpen the mind. Jet lag is working overtime on my body, I was up at 4 AM. I also need to walk around the yard and make sure nothing froze and burst while we were gone. A quick peek out the kitchen window gives me the impression nothing had so I think I will just it the couch instead.

You have a great day!

Carlos, Donna and Austin

So glad you had a great cruise. 50 years is fantastic, bless you Carlos and Donna. Yes it is hard to come down from the cloud and get grounded again. This will be a great year. Thank you for the update on Molly and McGee.

  5. flukestail Says:

Makes my heart feel good to know M&M always have a home to return to in their owl box. Even if they don’t have any more owlets, they will always have a place that is safe, protects them from the elements and predators, and is familiar to them.

Feels the same for me when I come here.

    Welcome home, C&D!

  6. Vikster Says:

Carlos & Donna: Congratulations and welcome home. I’d vote for the sofa myself.

Welcome home! Yes, those cruises can really spoil you. Reality can be harsh. I had a M&M kind of Christmas. My family gave me a beautiful carved wooden statue of a Barn Owl and a large framed copy of Chris’s painting of Molly and baby from the Molly the Owl book. It is hanging over my sofa and I love it. Needless to say I think of M&M daily now and if I think of them, I think of you, Donna, and Austin. How is Austin doing? Still loving what he is doing? Have a great day!!

  12. janie2 Says:

Welcome home! Happy to hear the cruise was relaxing and the food was sooo good. We missed you and are so glad to see our favorite owls looking so fit and cosy. There are a few other owl boxes, but they don’t have Molly and McGee.:-(

    Last Year’s New Year

January 14, 2011 – The First Copy Arrives

Giving birth to a new book is like giving birth to a child. You never know when the spark of life will start the process going; there is much imagining, speculation and planning over an extended period of time while waiting for the day of arrival; a family is involved; and when the moment of entry onto Planet Earth comes, that child is the most beautiful child in the world! The Molly books are like that – a wonder of creation!

I will always remember Carlos holding those books in his hands with so much awe, appreciation, and uncontained love, something which fans who were lucky enough to get copies of the books felt and still feel! Look back in the Ustream recordings for those treasures of moments!

    • CAequuslvr Says:

PegRod— I too remember when Carlos first showed us this photo book. You are so right when you talk about the emotions he showed. The memory of it brings tears to my eyes. I am so glad to have a copy of both of Carlos’ wonderful, special books.

      Thanks for the memories.

  37. Congratulations Carlos….what a wonderful trip! I certainly do miss watching Magee and McGee. It is pretty ironic to mention that just about a year and a half ago I was on a Mediteranian Cruise ship with my husband and as soon as we took off I asked my husband to purchase minutes for the Cruise ship computer so that I could watch the precious Owlettes…It was so great….we would end our day on the ship by watching my favorite owls and owlettes….I hope you have the camera back in action this mating season….will certainly be watching!

  38. Ruth White (petenwell) Says:

Thanks for the update! I miss them alot!

  39. PegRod Says:

Imaginations are staying busy, and now during StoryTime with Zorro we have another clue to a possible sighting of Carlos and Donna! After the story, John remarks that Carlos would know about the P51 Red Tails (and the red-shoulders, too!)

    • PegRod Says:

Note: There is a bonus drawing by young Artist Anders at the beginning of this recording. It is a simply lovely but complex composition of the Royal Garden owl box against a sea of blue skies, puffy white clouds, a bright yellow sun and the green, green grass of our beloved internet home. This original creation includes a frog proclaiming his presense with a “Croak”, Carlos whistling while he works saying “Gee this is lovely and I am a part of it” and a portion of a wise and memorable quote, chosen for an Earth Day celebration.

“The longer I live the more beautiful life becomes. If you foolishly ignore beauty, you will soon find yourself without it. Your life will be impoverished. But if you invest in beauty, it will remain with you all the days of your life.” – Frank Lloyd Wright (American Architect and Writer, 1867 – 1959).

      Thank you Anders!

  40. A Friend of M&M Says:

Thank you Carlos for the update on M&M and your trip. I am glad you “unplugged” and enjoyed yourselves. Thanks for the photos. We miss M&M.

  41. GeniaKnitz Says:

How wonderful to find a Molly Blog post and to see pictures of our favorite Barn Owls!
So glad you and Donna had a wonderful anniversary cruise, Carlos, and thank you much for letting us peek at our M&M.

Starr Ranch has a clutch of 6 owlets; 5 have hatched, #6 is due to hatch tomorrow. All seem healthy and well. But peeking into the hole in the eucalyptus tree just isn’t the same as watching Molly & McGee in their snug Owl Box.
Welcome home! And have a great time on your next adventure.

    • PegRod Says:

GeniaKnitz – thank you for that great information! I always wondered what kind of tree that was at Starr Ranch. Best wishes for health and an abundant life for all!

    Last Year’s New Year

    January 17, 2011 – 500 Books Signed

Last year’s post from this day includes a classic photograph entitled “Molly Kicks Out Old GagShag”. Remember how much gagshag (a beloved term for the nesting materials composed of disassembled pellets of fur and bones of rabbit and rodentia) Carlos removed at the end of the First Clutch? That is a great Trivia question.

Another great Trivia question is, “How many books did Carlos sign in all, including the award-winning Molly the Owl illustrated true story, and the two coffee table books (which I believe also both deserve awards of recognition of excellence for layout, composition and Carlos’ amazing night-time photography!)?” And “Who else autographed books?” And “Whooo is the world famous celebrity who signed only a selected number of books?”

New people buying the Molly books are still receiving some of the remaining original signed autographed copies, so if you guess a number in the hundreds you have missed the mark – keep guessing!

“Gee this is fun, and we are still a part of it!” Awwww, Molly, look what you started and you certainly chose Royally!

    Last Year’s New Year

January 18, 2011 – Eggs, Eggs, and More Eggs …

Carlos provides welcomed updates for Molly fans and a photo of another female owl in Southern California with her precious egglets – as fast as owl boxes were going up, they were being filled. Carlos adds some current research findings, “The only proven way to improve the owl population is with owl boxes.” And, it appears that, in Southern California, the “proof is in the owl boxes”!

    • PegRod Says:

PS – Molly fans would learn about tree hollows and other natural nesting places still around thanks to conservation! Starr Ranch continues to preserve the nesting areas. Carlos and Austin’s Field and Ustream trips to the hollow in the Old Sycamore tree in the dried creek bed of the McGee hunting fields of San Marcos, California revealed a natural nest, and , while there, they also observed barn owls flying into a barn (lol). A link I recently learned about, although from 2008, shows a barn owl family in the United Kingdom raising 8 owlets in a barn during a very rainy season – it is just lovely – Google search for “AGAINST THE ODDS Katherine Jenkins” on YouTube – beautifully photographed with lovely music.

Some MODs followed the PPO spotted eagle owl nest, and discovered nature’s resourcefulness when natural areas are taken away, with an established nest in a potted plant container on a second floor balcony in Johannesburg, South Africa. Those owls have successfully raised multiple clutches over many years.

      • CAequuslvr Says:

You were so right. “Against the Odds” was just beautiful. Even Stonehenge was in the background of one of the shots–Beautiful.

Hi, this may be a strange question, but when I look at this last entry under M&M’s photo, it says there are 51 comments. But, when I click on the comments themselves, it lists just 45. Am I missing something (rather, 6 comments) maybe floating? Thanx.

    • CAequuslvr Says:

ao—- They are counting the replies to specific posts.

So this is a reply that will add to the count, but does not get a new comment/post number.

      • ao Says:

Thanks for the explanation about the count. … I really enjoyed being part of the M&M experience(s), and certainly would be happy if the Royals decided to stay at home base awhile to capture any other family that the two might decide to start. … Meanwhile, there’s Starr Ranch (with 6 owlies is it?), The Owl Channel (featuring Roy & Dale … & now an egg), and also, Mel & Syd are back (via The Adventures With Mel & Syd site) so it’s likely we’ll be seeing egglets there soon. All in all, an explowlsion! Thanx again to PegRod & others who keep the Molly & McGee blog & story alive.

What a great surprise this was, an update from Amazing Artist/Videographer Austin himself, in his final year of High School, expressing his plans for the future, reflecting on his journey through the Owl Box experience, noting his gratefulness for being a part of it, and thanking fans for their support!

There is also an egg update for Mrs. Tuppence and Willow, two female barn owls in separate boxes…

Happy First Birthday Callia Blehm (we expect that you will proudly wear the aka of MiniMOD and probably spot you in a Molly the Owl outfit as well)!

While you are sitting inside looking at the rain or snow falling outside your windows, you might consider making plans to go to the International Festival of Owls! The clock is ticking – tick, tock, tick, tock. The Royal family and Molly and McGee will be recognized with an award – wouldn’t it be nice to be there and be part of it!

Here is a page from their site with some specifics!

This page gives you some hints about the weather – just think of today’s weather as an acclimation! The airport is in Wisconsin, so you will get to visit at least two states with a trip to this international conference where you can meet like-minded owl loving people from all continents!

If you go, take photos and share them with us, and also write a few stories to be published at least on this blog, but maybe also in your own locat paper!

    • PegRod Says:

    January 23, 2011 – Coach

You will want to look at this post and see the great photo of Carlos with moderator, chatter and photoshopper extraordinaire, Coach! For those who never saw her unique Molly the Owl series, they are so much fun and will take you from the Earth to Outer Space. Coach also followed other owl boxes on Ustream and came up with hundreds of other great creations! I will look for a link, but if anyone else has it, please post!

Immeasurable thanks to all the Molly volunteers who helped this Owl Box World to grow and thrive. Many volunteers worked very hard from the first day that Carlos and Austin connected The Owl Box of San Marcos, California, to Ustream. This long and winding road of the interactive and live internet is still being built as we forge ahead (thanks to TheOwlWatch and others)!

In January 2011, if Janet and her Mom had not hosted the book-signing event, you might still be asking your mail carrier, “Do you have a package for me?” (lol)! In addition to the main characters, I think of all of volunteers (VacaDude has taught us the word for Opera worlds – supernumeraries), when I hold the books in my hands – awwwww, the warmth of love and a community of kind and creative people. Our very own sensational supernumeraries!

  62. CAequuslvr Says:

Thanks again, ever so much, for all of your posts. You keep the blog alive and it is just so wonderful of you to help us remember back then.

    • PegRod Says:

      CAequuslvr – Thank you!

I think many Molly Watchers might have been like myself, and did not even know about the blog for many months, or did not have time to look! We were too busy watching the wonders of Molly and McGee’s First Clutch in The Owl Box 24/7, hosted by Carlos!

This is a gift for me personally to be able to comment, and a “thank you” to Carlos for all his hard work and his sharing photos, information and ideas with us. I am thankful for the opportunity to reflect a bit, and to share with fellow owl box travellers, some memories of our journey, especially for those who cannot find old links.

Last Year’s New Year and a Happy Birthday Carlos!

    January 26, 2011 – 68 Today

“68 Today” was not a weather forecast for San Marcos, California, but a statement of fact that the day was Carlos’ birthday! Save this fact for Trivia and add one.

Today the temperatures may reach the upper 70s with lots of sun, so it will be a happy weather day for his celebrations in San Marcos, CA, unless he is vacationing in Artic Village, Alaska, where it will be cloudy and an unimaginable range of temperatures way below zero from -27 to around -43!

If Carlos (and Donna – and you and I were not born) we would have never seen this beautiful family of barn owls we call our own – dear Molly and McGee, and had an opportunity to get to know our own Royal Family! A very interesting and possible thought is moniq50’s, who speculates that it just might be Molly’s birthday (hatch day), too!

Where in the world is Carlos? Last Year’s New Year

    January 27, 2011 – Vacadude’s “More Eggs”

Last year many MODs were following Willow’s box and she just could not stop laying eggs, even though she had a very small box!

This year (2012) the top egg producer is Dale of the Chula Vista, California owl box on Ustream. She is eggspecting number 5 today. Roy has brought her at least 26 desert cottontails and some voles and other treats over the past weeks. A rabbit a day keeps this box hopping!

Carlos shares one of Vacadude’s brilliant cartoons. Each one of his creations may look simple, but the conception is layered with a kaleidoscope of complex thoughts. If you have not read “A MODs Journal”, it is a must-read!

As for Molly, the mystery continues in 2012 for her fans. We know she is basking in the summer temperatures of San Marcos, regardless of her condition – eggnant, brooding or sleeping peacefully as zephyrs caress her new feathers!

Carlos and Molly, we miss you and hope you had a great double birthday party!

  73. A Friend of M&M Says:

Happy Belated Birthday Carlos. That article in SW airlines is amazing. Royal and Barn Owl are pretty synonymous with all of your MODs. Hope you are enjoying your trips and thanks so much for keeping us updated on M&M.

  74. Carol Ann Bossemeyer (cbosseme) Says:

I truly need Molly and McGee back in the saddle,. I hope it is in the plans. I miss everyone so much. Paint love!!
