12 Days Of Molly: Ninth Day

January 4, 2012

Dear Carlos,

On the Ninth Day of Molly my true love gave to me …

Nine Rabbits Taunting
Eight MODs A-Chatting

Seven Wings A-Waving
Six Deet, Deet, Deet…

Five Large Prints
Four Calling Birds
Three French Hens
Two Skinny Legs

and a Barn Owl In A Palm Tree

On this Ninth Day we celebrate our fearless hero, Tauntz. Brash, elusive, maybe foolish Tauntz is an inspiration of intestinal fortitude.

Check out the Tauntz collection here.

Stay tuned as we continue The 12 Days Of Molly, revisiting some of the most beloved images and introducing fresh new offerings as well.

Happy New Year and enjoy the adventure!

Hi Carlos, I am disappointed that this blog has seemingly turned into a sales pitch – I loved hearing about your adventures and the owl box.

    January 6, 2011 – Mollly Makes Top 10 News Story List 2010

This news about the news coverage was fun for all. There are some good media links on Chris Adams’ (rocketman) site to the original television news stories, if you want a lookback or looksee!

First Clutch Molly fans will never forget how entranced they were with the original Molly the Owl book trailer and the first illustrations, as the award-winning book grew from an idea, to a few drawings, to a video, to an e-book and finally to an award-winning “must-have” children’s book for all ages written by best-selling author Eric Blehm. Although long forgotten, Eric was a childhood best friend of Carlos and Donna Royal’s son. They re-established contact when the Royals found the magnificent true mystery, “The Last Season”, in the book section of Costco magazine and then warehouse). New readers – When you look at the YouTube video of the Molly the Owl book trailer, note that the “Garage Band” free music which Chris Adams chose, is now used as the background music for several television advertisements in Southern California, and most likely also used around the world!

All the pieces of the Molly the Owl experience, just seemed to fall naturally into place, but behind all this was (and is) a lot of hard work, volunteering, generosity, problem solving, persistence, strength of character, wisdom, creation, community, and sharing – and most importantly ,,,, connectedness of millions from all over the world, kind and compassionate communication, and lots of love,

And … the computer internet made all this possible.

    Owl Box Owlets for 2012
    The future is a mystery
    Stay Tuned!

While we are waiting for news about new “un”common barn owl families starting Springtime clutches, I was reminded of the Rodent Equivalency Chart. Here is the link to a useful chart (approximate values based on average sizes) created and shared by a knowing First Clutch viewer of M&M.

While you are looking at this, you might want to take a peek at some of VacaDude’s cartoons – I was reminded of the one of the gopher hitchhiking out of town!

This quote from an American poet made me imagine another:

Deep in their roots all flowers keep the light
    —Theodore Roethke

Deep in their cellz all owlz keep the life
    — AnonyPeg

The Owl Pages are visited frequently by MODs wanting to learn a little more about physiology. This page is on “Owl Breeding and Reproduction” – something to read and think about as the season of reproduction begins!

Is any MOD following all the owl boxes, who could give us a brief summary/update here now and then?

Happy New Year Carlos, Donna and Austin. It seems that all of the Owls from the other boxes that stream online and back in their boxes getting read for new clutches. In face Starr Ranhc have two eggs that just hatched. We are all curious to find out if M&M have been back in the box and if so are there any signs of a possible C4. It is amazing how many people have followed your lead, including myself. I have gophers who are ruining my front yard, just killed all of my venca and a beautiful fern tree and I am putting up my box next week in hopes of having a bunch of natural pest controllers i.e Barn Owls. You have been such a great inspiration. Looking forward to hearing if there are M&M C4 possibilities.

In the absence of M & M, I’ve been following Mr. and Mrs. O at Starr Ranch. There is some amazing video of the first two hatches.

Hey, where is everybody? No “postcards” from the trip, no Molly ‘n’ McGee news, no nada???

  11. Barb Says:

Happy New Year to all the “Royals”, human and owls alike. We hope you had a wonderful Holiday and trip and a belated Happy Anniversary. Looking forward to a wonderful year in the owl box and seeing you all again. Love ya all to bits…..barb & neil

PS: Carlos, missed your New Year letter. :)

  12. PegRod Says:

This quote is from our very own owl box cartoonist, John Atkinson, aka VacaDude! lol

“I firmly believe that nature constantly shows us beauty that compels us to look, but having a camera in your hand forces you to truly see.” John “VacaDude” Atkinson

You can read more of his reflections here and see some great photos, too. California fog is unique and can create a mystical magical feeling.

The barn owls of California have adapted and can hunt in the fog. (personal observation from watching Ustream owl boxes)! The Chula Vista owls have been dining on desert cottontail rabbitz almost every night, but as we know, Tauntz lives on!

    Story Time with Zorro
Vinky and Vobble Visit the Bahamas

Now, I wonder where DotRot, the storywriting leader, got that idea?

Hmmmm, the Bahamas are in the Caribbean where the Royals were at the end of 2011! And, as a play on words, NASA and Nassau are locations of interest!

While we anticipate photos and tales from that Royal Retirement Adventure in the Caribbean Islands, fans imagined a story for the Virtual Owlets Vinky and Vobble (most of us have never been in the Caribbean, so facts are imagined!). The story begins at about 22:00. Anyone can join to write stories on Sundays at 3 pm Pacific time on VacaChat, which Zorro the mouse reads (without rehearsal) at 6 pm. Just bring your imagination and join in the fun of writing round-robin style – no grammar, spelling or typo police – it is all about living the Molly Motto of “Gee this is fun, and we are a part of it!”

Happy New Year to the Royals, M&M and MODS!
I keep checking to look for any updates on my favorite owls. Fingers crossed for new clutch and able to view them.

  15. Hi Carlos & Donna,
Happy New Year! Just wanted to let you know that I have written a novel (the third in my Maeve Kenny series) called “A Wisdom of Owls” in which the characters receive a barn owl box as a gift and they watch a clutch being raised via webcam. I have you to thank completely for giving us all the opportunity to experience this through Molly & McGee. Would love to send you a copy in thanks.

  16. PegRod Says:

Mary Pat, your new book “A Wisdom of Owls” sounds fantastic! Thanks for sharing with your fellow MODs the information about it here.

I was looking for something else and found this great poem by OwlFan1 from April 2010 on the blog. You may have to increase your view size to 200% to read it!. Just think, she wrote this near the beginning of the First Clutch!
