Great Blue Heron - Photo by Carlos Royal

For those of you that did not recognize the bird, it is a Great Blue Heron. It landed on our RV garage the other morning and put on a show for over an hour. I finally got my camera out and took a photo just to show it was here looking for some publicity.

Thank you so much for the great blue heron picture. Blue herons are one of my favorite species of birds. We have quite a few around this area of northern New York and I love to see them flying with their long legs stretched out behind them or wading in a creek watching for a meal to catch. We also have an area not too far from here where they nest, so I have seen their huge nests in the tops of trees. However, I did not know they would perch on the tops of buildings, so your picture and description was really interesting to me. Liked your funny comments from the first post, too. :)

Cool heron! We have them in our pond across the street. Having them back is a big deal. Much of their habitat was lost due to neglect and loss of lands. Our county park district took years getting prairie and wet lands back in shape. But their efforts have paid off with the return of native plants and wild life.

    Thanks!
    Vicki

Thank you Carlos and Chris! I agree that these Howloween Masks are so cute and great for school children, and to hand out as Halloween treats!

One other resource that Owl Watchers and Loverz (OWLz) may not know about (or remember) are the free pdf Teacher Curriculum Guides to download on Molly the Owl Books – “K through Grade 2” and “Grades 3 through 5” units. Each package has many guides and activities.

You don’t have to be a teacher or a student to have fun – open your own Private Home School for having some fun and teaching yourself! Hmmmm – reminds me of the saying, “Everything I ever needed to know, I learned in kindergarten…. ”

Another useful link to look at once in awhile is the Flag Counter for Molly’s Blog! That way you will not feel like you are the only one looking.
    http://s01.flagcounter.com/more/RaSW

As you can see, people from at least 99 countries (some visitors are unidentified secret agents) have visited Molly’s blog and although the statistics change week by week, and day by day, someone is always looking in!

In case you missed it last year, “The Owlets’ Halloween Adventure” is the first imaginative story written round-robin style in the Holiday Collection of Story Time with Zorro (free pdf). This volume begins with October 31, 2010 and ends with the January 2, 2011 “Max’s New Year Resolution”. All stories are compiled and edited by DotRot, who also starts each story off with the beginning paragraph, a springboard from which to jump off into the land of imagination, and somehow wraps the zany and fun writing game up at the end with some words of wisdom, making some sense of seeming nonsense, and always finishes up with a Happy Ending! Fans show up and usually there are from 8 to 14 people who take turns writing lines – everyone is welcomed. It is all about the fun, and it is good brain exercise, too! Just as typonese is welcomed and understood in live Owl Box chat, creative writing is welcomed, even if nobody understands it, but the writer themselves!

  16. Judy Sackson Says:

Loved hearing all the news and seeing the great picture of the great blue heron! What an amazing looking bird! I’ts wonderful that we can all still learn about wildlife from you, Carlos!
Hope you are having a lot of interesting things going on in your life (just not quite so hectic). I’m glad that you are keeping us up to date on Austin, too. Way to go, Austin!!
Thanks, as always, Royals, for remembering your (and Molly’s) friends and fans!

There is a story about Eric Blehm and Molly the Owl books in the North County Times today!
    http://www.nctimes.com/news/local/columnists/pfingsten/article_afc79049-1bed-5a82-98a7-81d04e0227eb.html

In VacaChat on Ustream today (Sunday, Oct 30th), chatter “Jes63”, who also is one of the faithful MODs and a volunteers who has helped with mailing Molly the Owl books, said she saw a television news story on the Channel 10 San Diego evening local news. If anyone finds a link, please post it here for others to see! By the way, great Howloween story, sound effects, and reading of “The Raven” by Zorro and VacaDude – recording is already on Ustream.

You can ask your own local news stations to pick up the story!
