The Final Farewell The Owl Box video includes some of the Molly Songs, but to have them handy, it is wonderful that for only .99 cents each we can now have them on iTunes. This is great – now you can tell your friends, family and local newspapers to pick up the story and spread the word!

Okay, I am looking for one more Barbara Allen interview and will post when I find it!

September 10, 2010 – Hawk Scares The Hork Out of Molly Watchers

More great photographs from the Carlos Royal collection – two remarkable ones are of the Cooper’s Hawk and ‘Molly Leaves With Rodent’. This is most likely one of those treats that were too big to eat and Ashley and Carrie could not “find the zipper to open it up.” Boy, do Molly fans miss the morning RNN reports by Head Moderator Chocomare – fun reports with a list of
    nightly “rodentia” delights.

  4. PegRod Says:

Thanks to Carlos Royal, Molly’s Blog has a wealth of information, links, photographs and even the lyrics to some of the “Molly” songs. The original lyrics to “Molly Was Her Name” are found in this posting from August 13, 2010.

  5. Terry Flinn Says:

I downloaded them, Just love them. Miss seeing Molly and McGee, but this keeps them alive for me and also looking at Austins’s CD’s. Glad to have been a part of it all. Terry Flinn/Oklahoma City

  7. Barbara Says:

Thanks for the info. Downloaded them this afternoon. Sure miss M&M and our family of chatters. Hope everyone is doing well. Carlos and Donna-hope you are enjoying your adventures! Think Fall everyone!!!

  8. Madonna Varchetto-Bonner Says:

I miss that pretty face of Molly’s and those long legs of McGee’s. I miss the laughter of Carlos and Donna and that enterprising Austin. How about you all? Hope everyone is well and enjoying life! Love to all, Madonna

  9. erindort Says:

Yay!!! Barbara! I downloaded the songs with a big smile on my face. So far there is a 5 star (what else?) rating on the Molly songs. I hope more of Barbara’s song will be available on itunes soon! — you go, girl! —

  10. Virgene Colby-auntie_vee Says:

Thanks Carlos, just downloaded Barbara Allen’s songs. So great to have them available. Helps us remember the wonderful times with Molly and McGee and the Royal family.

Great photos continue from last year. One that made me chuckle has the caption ‘Molly Watching San Marcos Horkers’. I forgot to post one link from a year ago yesterday. When you see it, you will see why I laughed. It is always a pleasure to read over the comments posted last year as well in response to each blog entry.

September 12, 2010 – The Games Mothers Play

More marvelous photos of both Molly and McGee. Carlos notes interesting observations about Molly in his blog entry.

Carlos begins – ‘Molly spent most of the night playing games with her owlets taking food in and out. Many times she would take the same treat out of the box only to turn around and bring it back in as if it was a fresh treat. Molly was trying to trick the owlets into eating all the food not just the fresh treats.’

Fans will love this one – the birth of a timely logo! We miss our ‘host with the most’ and that voice that can roll a mellifluous “deet, deet, deet” like nobody else can!

    • PegRod Says:

PS – Carlos Royal Fans can’t wait to hear our Molly songs LIVE on KOWL again! In the meantime, iTunes is a new computer technology lesson for Owl Watchers and MODs to learn from their passion for all things Molly, and the beloved songs are now in iTune files being transported to desktops, laptops, ipads and ipods and whereever else they can go. Rated 5 Stars by All!

    September 15, 2010 – Owl Games

Carlos begins with, “Last night was another exciting night at the owl box with Molly and McGee playing games.” and continues with another tale of a visit by a Cooper’s Hawk! He does not name “Gary Cooper” … mystery hawk! I will see if I can find a video link to post.

There are two recordings. You will notice the early morning “marine layer” (fog) which is common in the inland areas off the Southern California Pacific ocean coastline, until the bright San Marcos sun breaks through. Today looks quite similar outside, a year later!

2011 – The weather forecast looks great – we can be certain that our owl families are enjoy this terrific weather – Partly cloudy. High near 75F. Winds WNW at 5 to 10 mph. (usually it is a little warmer in the sun than in the shady areas, like in the Royal Palmz Hotel or the Hollow in the Old Sycamore Tree!)

      Just imagine ….

September 16, 2010 – Let The Owl Games Continue

A much requested photograph in this bunch is “Molly on Target” which was selected as a favorite to be put on Cafe Press memorabilia. You can still find it there. Carlos captured many Molly, McGee and Owl Box Moments which will live on in history!

“Molly on Target” was also beautifully arranged for the new Molly the Owl “America” series – appropriate for holidays and remembering and honoring those values.

I love the photos of “McGee with Mouse” and “Molly Removing Treat”. These owl parents worked so hard hunting and raising three clutches of owlets – no wonder they need a break!

    September 17, 2010 – Inside the Box

Up to this point, I don’t believe there were many inside the box photographs posted on the blog. These are simply adorable! Carlos explains, “These photos were taken using the web camera attached to the side of the box. Natural light, no flash.”

Thank you Carlos, and thank you Ashley and Carrie for those wonderful poses! Here, the owlets are almost 6 weeks old!

With a blog heading like this you may wonder what was “just released”! I could give you a clue, such as, what does “Certified MOD for Life” mean to you? You could also post the answer to that question here in the comments for others to ponder, enjoy, and to add their own answer.

What does “Certified MOD for Life” mean to you, fellow fans and Owl Box watchers?

Included in this blog entry are a series of wonderful photos by Carlos Royal of Molly with “humongous” treats!

Isn’t it great to have the time to savor the humongous treats.

  19. CAequuslvr Says:

PegRod— Thank you so very much for all of your pstings of the links to such wonderful memories. It is a hoot to go back and see all of these. Keep up the good work we MODs really appreciate it all.

  20. Susie Brown Says:

Got a DVD, what a treasure. At least I’ll have the owls video to remember them by. Carlos & Donna, have a wonderful vacation and post a blog sometime, let us know what you’re doing – maybe some pictures!!!

September 21, 2010 – Owlets Just Keep Growing

Some nice daytime inside photographs of Ashley and Carrie – fluff and growing feathers.

Some fans may not know that there is another good resource to find some fan-generated memories, links, poems and more. Molly the Owl Wiki page is the most comprehensive collection to date.

Wikipedia even has a page that has been in development under the key words “The Owl Box” indicating that those words are enough to know that one is referring to the most famous common barn owls in the world and their Owl Box of San Marcos, California! Wikipedia entries are subject to correction and authentication since it is an open online community-based project.

  22. Judy Sackson Says:

September 24, 2010 – Owlets Feed at The Door

Carlos begins with, “The owlets have gotten brave enough to stick their heads and bodies out the door while waiting on Molly or Mcgee to bring them a treat. Today is day 49 since Ashley hatched, it has been noted in some books that the owlets have stepped completely out of the box by day 50, but most usually it is between day 60 and day 66”

Molly Watchers had so much fun learning something new every day! It is a priceless education, and free, too!

Each photo in this entry is magnificent – moments captured in time by Carlos Royal and his camera equipment – pitch black outside but with his amazing ability to hear in the dark he has impeccable timing – like the owls!

    Hmmmm, very interesting!

  25. CAequuslvr Says:

Someone posted a comment about “Is it fair” that Carlos turned off the cameras. Here is my response:
The DVDs were to help Austin pay his way through college, not to keep the cameras running. The CafePress purchases and Molly the Owl books were “special” things that we MODs asked for, not to keep the cameras running. I never felt betrayed. Donna & Carlos gave us so much more than we ever expected. I think some people started taking it as an “entitlement”–it wasn’t. M&M was always a “gift”. I don’t remember Carlos ever saying “to keep the cameras running”. Also, don’t forget that an amount from the purchases went to the San Marcos Community Fund (I think at one point it was $12,000). There is no “is it fair” about it. We got so much more than money could every buy. We got a family and community and for many, life long friendships.

    • PegRod Says:

Well said CAequuslvr! We are so lucky to have had much more than a glimpse into the lives of so many ‘un”common barn owls and other creatures in the Royal Gardens (and on Field Trips) via The Owl Box of San Marcos, California broadcast on Ustream tv by Carlos and Donna with Austin Faure’s contributions. Live chat also opened up a new world community of friendship, creativity, and education for many which not only lives on, but keeps on growing! I am ever grateful for this wonderful gift given freely, with no strings attached.

    • erindort Says:

      Amen! Very well said CA.
Again, what the Royals did was more than fair. It was extremely generous, and we are thankful to them; and happy for them.

September 25, 2010 – Kentuckiana MODs 2:30 PM PDT Today

Tauntz poses for a photo behind of lovely bushlet of white flowers in the Royal Gardens of San Marcos, CA to reassure fans that he is, in fact, alive and well and still living. Carlos shares a photo of a crow toting a tasty treat from Walnut Grove Park, the setting for the first Molly Watchers Picnic. He posts an article about an upcoming joint activity with The Owl Box Ustream broadcast channel and the Raptor Rehabilitators of Kentucky. I will post the link of the recording if I find it!

MODs will be delighted to see a new article of interest about Tom Stephan, falconer and owl box builder who created and installed, for Carlos and Donna, Molly and McGee’s “Home, Sweet Home”. There is also an insert “What’s Up With Molly and McGee?”

    September 26, 2010 – Temp Hits 100 Degrees

Last year at this time, it was Hot, Hot, Hot and now it is not! Beautiful autumn weather in San Marcos, California today with temperatures in the 70’s and moving up to the mid-80’s by the end of the week. Mr. Mister is History (see blog photo) and will never be put up again, since owls adapt to their environment and the water actually damaged The Owl Box roof.

Quote “Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.” ~George Eliot

  29. PegRod Says:

Owl Box fans may or may not know that last year at this time John “VacaDude” Atkinson, cartoonist of the “Molly and Family starring in …. Laughing Outside the Box” cartoon series, designed five more owl fabrics as a result of the popularity of Carlos Royal’s one-of-a-kind custom-designed fabric used for his Owl Box Hawaiian Shirt given gratefully to him from some fans at the First Molly Watchers Picnic in October 2010.

There are only two of these custom shirts in the world – and only one printing of that fabric – because later fans had a similar Hawaiian shirt made with some of the remaining custom fabric given back by Carlos for VacaDude’s birthday. The last yard of the fabric was given to Donna Royal who has created something special with it!

By the way, this year celebrated the 75th Anniversary of the Hawaiian Shirt, which is very popular in Southern California for both business and casual comfort.

Of course, Sept 27, 2011 is not Monday so the sale you will see when you click on this blog is from last year, but the prints are still available online.

The Magic Feather bookmarks are also cherished by Molly lovers and can be purchased at Molly the Owl books. These things do not last forever, so if you want them I would suggest that you buy them within the coming year! Great Christmas Stocking Stuffers!

Carlos Royal photos from this date continued to provide amazing evidence, along with an education, of the nighttime activities – Ashley and Carrie, the growing owlets, are a joy to see!

    September 28, 2010 – Ashley Steps Out 4 Times

When you read this blog entry, you will see that Carlos uses a phrase that he and other fans used to characterize growing owlet Ashley’s bravado – as being with “No Fear”. VacaDude drew some cartoons along this line – “Ashley Knows No Fearz”!

Today is also the one-year anniversary of the third of Barbara Allen Molly songs, too! Carlos ends this blog entry with, “Way to go Ashley. Barbara Allen released her latest Molly Song ‘Wesley’s Lesson,’ which of course is about learning to fly. The song can be downloaded from

Fans can’t wait for “Wesley’s Lesson” to be put on iTunes!

  32. Martina Says:

Hello! This is kind of off topic but I need some help from
an established blog. Is it tough to set up your own blog?
I’m not very techincal but I can figure things out pretty quick. I’m thinking about creating my own but I’m not sure where to start. Do you have any points or suggestions? Many thanks
