Austin Completes New DVD!

Natural Nutcracker (Photo by Carlos Royal)

I saw yesterday in the chat room where many of you were talking about crows and their ability to crack nuts. What they do is fly high into the air then drop the nuts on the street, sidewalk or your roof, any hard surface will do, thus cracking the nuts. Above is a photo of a crow in our backyard with a walnut, latter he flew up high in the air and dropped it in the middle of the street thus cracking it open. Sometimes it take move than one drop to get the job done. Quiet often we hear thumps or pings on the roof and upon checking find it is just the crows dropping nuts. We have a tile roof just made for nut cracking accord to the crows in our area. This can be very annoying when one is trying to take a nap in the afternoon.

Barbara Allen has put  the three Molly Songs on a CD since so many of you have asked for it. You can purchase the Molly Song CD from Barbara for only $8.00 plus Shipping and Handling. Just send Barbara an email and let her know how many you want. Don’t forget to send her your mailing address.

    Wonderful news;
    good job Austin!

As soon as I get some Fun Money I will be ordering.

So, that is what the occasional thump clunk sound on our roof could be, those crows dropping nuts! How funny! (except when trying for the afternoon nap of course).

  2. VSue Says:

    Oh, just wanted to add

Congratulations to Austin (and Carlos) for completing the new Molly Movie, and thank you for the update and wonderful photograph of the “natural nutcracker”.

When I looked into The Owl Box chatroom yesterday, donnaroyal was chatting with others about Walnut trees, nuts and more, including golf-ball sized hail. It was fun to see how much people were learning (and those of us watching, too)! One person recommended that the best way to open up one of those “green round husk covered” walnuts was to drive over them in the driveway! Tough nuts to open, but tasty, and jammed pack full of good nutrients for both avians and homo sapiens alike – good brain food (rich in omega-3).

What exciting news! I have been delighted with everything I have ordered and received! My Molly Songs CD is on its way, and I can’t wait to get my Austin movie. It sounds absolutely wonderful!

  7. Marny Says:

I look forward to receiving my copy of the DVD!! Yea!!

When my development was being landscaped someone’s bright idea was to plant macadamia trees!!!

Those nuts are the hardest — and the noises on the roof are awful – especially after spending over $6,000 for a new roof! LOL

I wouldn’t complain if the crows would open some just for me because my hammer just crushes the nuts and there is fear that I’ll break the concrete inside and/or outside!

One of the original chatters from the Molly site at Sportsman’s Paradise Online, James Hill, passed away this week. We were all very sad to hear of his death. He was a photographer and made some wonderful slideshows and collages of Molly and the owlets that he shared with us. Here is a link to his obituary which even mentions Molly: And here is a link to some of his slideshows:

    • PegRod Says:

Chris, I want to thank you for sharing the link about James Hill. I did not know him, but by your sharing, I am grateful to have been introduced to such a talented member of the Molly the Owl extended family. The Owl Box has brought together people who would never have known one another. I now feel that I have met James Hill, have seen some of his art and photographs, and a photograph of him as well – what deeply beautiful eyes he had to see the world he photographed so well.

      • Chris in Olympia Wa aka cbbrunner Says:

PegRod, that is so nice to say. He was very intelligent and talented and shared so much with all of us at the chat site. The first link includes a guestbook and his parents have learned how much he was appreciated by the MODs through our posts. The second link now includes some tributes by some of the folks at the site who remembered him.

    • erindort Says:

Thank you for posting here about your JH. I am so glad I decided to read some of the older posts that I missed while my computer was down. I followed the links, and I am totally amazed by his talent.
All of you at SPO have my heartfelt sympathy. I know you will miss him so much.

      • Chris in Olympia Wa aka cbbrunner Says:

Thank you erindort. Yes, it has been hard on many people at SPO. The family has been wonderful. They suddenly found out about this whole community of friends that their son/brother had that they never knew about and have allowed us to be a part of the grieving. Donations have been made by folks at SPO to a local Raptor Center and they may release a raptor in the area he used to live in his memory.

  9. Donna Says:

Hi Carlos, never knew that about the crows, you learn something new everyday. I’ll be looking forward to Austins DVD, I’m sure it’s going to be wonderful! I miss Molly when she doesn’t come home (bad girl) at least we get to see handsome McGee all day! Thank you all for everything, take care. I’ll be watching tonight!

  10. CAequuslvr Says:

Austin’s new DVD sounds just wonderful.

Yes, it is a very practical adaptation that crows have found to crack the nuts. Who says animals are dumb?

August 6, 2010 – Molly to be on NBC Nightly News Saturday

August 6, 2010 – Coffee Table Book Now Available

This time last year was an exciting time. For everything there is a season: a time to be on NBC, a time for new creations and a new clutch, a time for the first coffee table book of Carlos Royal’s amazing photographs, and Austin’s first Molly DVD Documentary.

Now is the time for the second coffee table book of photography, a new Molly Movie DVD, a time for M&M to stay in the Palmz, a time to stay in the box, a time for molting, a time to rest and have a Staycation, and a time to learn new Words of the Day (McGee likes to learn while he sleeps)! This is also a nice time, with learning and growing taking place in new ways, for the old and new Owl Box viewers, too.

“Gee this is fun, and we are a part of it!” Thanks to All! And “All” always to the Chatroom Moderators who keep the door open, keep us safe, keep us learning, and make the world a better place with their love, rulez, teaching, understanding and true spirit of charity for fellow individuals and the world community alike (volunteerism).
