    I believe it’s a Red-Shafted Flicker…but could be wrong. Have fun!

    • Virgene Colby-auntie_vee Says:

weeezer you are right. It is the Red Shafted we have here in Arizona. We also had them in Northern California.

      • Holly Says:

Aye, this is a western or red shafted flicker. Northern flickers have yellow feather shafts and yellow under their wings and tail, westerns are identical, only with red instead of yellow. Spectacular picture, though, as always!

Yes The Northern Flicker is so beautiful. I am lucky enough that our family Of N.Flickers stays in our neighborhood year round. I love when they come to our yard to feed and they call out. It is Music to my ears. They especially love the berried suet during the winter.

A Flicker hit our living room window this spring while being chased by a hawk. It was killed and I was devastated. I picked it up and examined it in great detail. The colours were absolutely spectacular. I gave it a very decent burial

What a great picture of the N. Flicker you have captured. Have you ever had any of your photography submitted to the Birds and Blooms magazine?
I have been lucky enough to have seen the N. flickers in my yard for the past few years and they sure are beautiful but, man, are they ever loud! They love to take over our bird feeders and chase the other birds away.

Carlos … thank you so very, very much for all you and Donna have shared with us … and for the beautiful picture today of the Flicker … we have one that visits our yard, but he’s a very courteous visitor … he tosses the leaves around the trees and fences, but doesn’t bother the feeders … I’m sure the local Cardinals guarding the feeders might deter him …

May God’s blessings be with you and Donna and your family always … have a great day and week … k

Carlos and Donna, welcome back to the land of the living! It’s wonderful that you are taking a long deserved break. And thrilled to hear that your reunion went well.
We’re located further south in Arizona in Scottsdale. Just yesterday morning my husband and I watched an entire family of either Golden Eagles or Harris’ Hawks land on the power poles and lines behind our house. Their call sounded like a buzz saw. I’ve never heard anything like it before. The female is huge, all black with a yellow beak. The male a bit smaller with a few markings in grey and the juveniles slightly lighter in color and much smaller all have yellow beaks. They all hung out together for a couple of hours. I think they’re headed south to Mexico for the winter. I was wishing I had a 300mm lense for my digital camera…. and thinking of you. Williams is a cool little town, right on Route 66. Lots of fun diners and historic places to visit. And of course the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and that great Railroad. Worth parking the camper just for a trip on the old steam train with singing cowboys.

Beautiful Picture. I just love birds of all kinds. I’d love for you to have a site for all your pictures like this. I have a room where I keep my pet birds and I’m hanging pictures of Molly and her family in there. It would be wonderful to be able to hang pictures of other birds as well. You have a special knack for catching the perfect shot. Many “photographers” don’t have that special talent or instinct. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful bird shots with us.

I have Stellar Jay’s and the Northern Flicker in my yard. They are both stunning birds. I feed them and to see them up close and personal can take my breath away.

I am also a panda bear fan. The Atlanta zoo just had a new cub. It is wonderful to watch mama panda care for their young. Right now the cub cannot maintain it’s own body heat. Mama will hold the cub for 3 wks straight; no food or water, just to keep the right temperature on the cub and to care for it. You get a chance view their website http://www.zooatlanta.org/1212/panda_cam. The cam is only on Mon thru Friday and only on from 10 AM to 2 PM EST.
