Roark is Back
January 25, 2013
We have had some rather yucky weather here in San Marcos but the hawks love it because the grubs come to the surface and are easy pickings. We have actually had a pair of hawks in the backyard most every morning. Wouldn’t it be fun if they nested but I think they like to nest in tall trees which we don’t have in our backyard. We just have lots of grubs for them to feed on.
I just got a text message from Austin, he just completed “3D Animation,” at Platt College with a score of 99%. One more course down on his way to his BA degree.
I turn 70 tomorrow and I must say, so far it has been a great ride. It helps not to spend too much time looking in the mirror, front or rear view. Donna and I have several trips planned for 2013 and may add a few more just for fun. We are really getting into road trips and just stopping when something looks interesting, but to be honest it is hard to find a more exciting place than our backyard. This week we have seen red-shoulder hawks, kestrels, scrub- jays, mockingbirds, hummingbirds, yellow-rumped warblers, cedar waxwings, bushtits and a ruby-crown kinglet.
Here is some great advice for a rainy day: Play in the puddles.
You have a great day, I am off to play in the puddles.

Happy, Happy Birthday, Carlos, and here’s to many more fantastic years ahead! And—about the rain—at least it isn’t that perilous ice and snow we have here in the midwest! Even my intrepid squirrels aren’t navigating much today! Enjoy your travels and be safe. Have you seen any owls around your yard this week?
Kathy in New “Owlbany” Indiana
January 25, 2013 at 2:10 pm
No owls, in fact, I have been receiving reports that most of the owl boxes do not have barn owls. I don’t know if something has happened to reduce the population but I do know that we are hearing the calls of the Great Horned Owls now late at night where we didn’t before. Great Horned Owls like to feed on Barn Owls. If the barn owls are going to show up, they should be showing up anytime time. This is about the time Molly showed up back in 2010. We will keep our fingers crossed for those looking for barn owls for their boxes.
January 25, 2013 at 2:54 pm
Since I have recieved so many emails wanting to know if something had caused a decline in the Barn Owl population. It seems like most of the owl boxes do not have barn owls yet. I called the Department of fish and wildlife and what they said is that the barn owl population will vary or self regulate with the food supply and the weather. They also pointed out that is a little early to get concerned because the nesting season is just starting and it has been cold. His recommendation was to give them to the end of February. If you start seeing barn owls let us know.

Happy 70th Birthday Carlos! Yes, go play in the puddles and have some fun. Thank you again for all your time and effort you have put in and letting us all enjoy Molly and her brood! I love to think back on all the hours spent watching the owls! I loved it. It greatly saddened my heart when you had to write and tell us about that you were not seeing them anymore. Little do they know how they transformed so many lives! Have a wonderful 2013. Kudos to your grandson! 99% is fantastic!

I love hearing from y’all and what you’re doing. We all consider you family and love you and yours. Congrats to Austin, but we knew he would be successful at whatever he attempts – he has a great mentor! Have fun – we’d love some photos from your trips!

Happy 70th Carlos! You know, 70 is the new 50. Happy trails to you and Donna and safe travels. No playing in puddles at my place….we are stomping through the snow and trying to avoid slipping on ice. I have a pair of Red Shouldered Hawks…they like to pose for the camera; and a very bad Coppers hawk or two. I always enjoy drinking out of my Molly mugs.
January 25, 2013 at 3:20 pm
So nice to hear from you Carlos. We haven’t heard anything in along time it seems. A little weird today though- go to the KITV face book page. They found a barn owl hanging from a tree near punch bowl in Honolulu. Hang by the wing that is- they saved him and tended to his injured wing. It’s a nice story.

How wonderful to hear about what’s going on in the Royal backyard…and your life! I celebrate your 70 years! Just a youngster yet. I’m 77 and find that I have more fun with each passing year….that’s because I do and think things that give me pleasure. Sounds like you do, too. Hope you and Donna enjoy your trips this year. I did a lot of traveling when I was younger, so I’m enjoying and savoring being at home and watching my own bird companions….cardinals, robins, mockingbirds, finches, flickers and more. My motto for this year is “Create a new scene in 2013″!
Thanks again for the post and for staying in touch with the MODS.

It must be fun to have Roark back…beautiful photograph! Happy 70th Birthday to you, Carlos!! Carlos, if a happy life is measured by the joy that you have given to others, then your birthday will be a truly happy day. We love to hear the details of your road trips with Donna in what is clearly the prime of your lives. Also, it is a joy to know that Austin is making outstanding progress in his academic career. He will clearly be a self-made success, just like his grandfather. I hope he also inherited your zest for all that life offers, like your love for your family and your passion for the life and beauty that surrounds you.Yes, the barn owl season is late, but it will be that much sweeter when we do get to see owlets.

By the way, a flock of cedar waxwing found their way to our backyard this past week. We were so excited- we only see them every couple years. Pretty birds, eating berries, of course. Fun to see Roark in your photo.

Happy Birthday Carlos, Hope you had fun splashing in the puddles! We saw a barn owl in our neighborhood a couple weeks ago. What a treat. We are in San Marcos but not where we have sen the barn owl before. I laughed when my husband said stop there is an owl! I told him it was a fake on the roof of the neighbor! Then it flew over us!! We saw it fly back with a mouse or such. Of course our 1st thought was it was a Molly and McGee offspring. <3. Bonnie

Belated Happy Birthday, Carlos. I’m glad many of God’s creatures call you lovely yard their home. You, Donna and Molly introduced me to the world of owls . We have two Great Horned owls that call the area around our home their territory. They have been around for about 10 yrs. (or maybe their offspring have inherited the area). In summer, we stay in Wyoming, and there too, we have a Great Horned owl that visits on our porch. Since Molly, the barn owl has taken my heart. The attached video of a Barn Owl is fun to watch. I hope you will enjoy it as I did. You’ll have to type it in you browser.
Stay happy and healthy. Happy Trails!

Also you have a space after .com so this must be tweaked too! I watched. This barnowl seems to be captive with chains on its legs. – not wild. Interesting. Thanks.

Happy Birthday, Dear Carlos. I’m so happy to hear of the Royal’s adventures and Austin’s accomplishments. I’ve been away from your site for awhile, but so happy to come back and read your blog. Feels like family :)

Hi Donna and Carlos. I wonder every day about Molly and McGee’s box and whether it is filled with the happy sounds of chittering and deeting.

No owls, but we did have a duck show up in our backyard this morning plus the blue birds are back and thinking about nesting. We just returned from our 30 day cruise of the Indian Ocean. It was great and very enlightening. We are off again next week, going to North Dakota to play in the last of the snow, which should feel good since where we were for the last month was really hot and humid. All the best and who knows maybe the owls will be back next year.

Carlos & Donna, how wonderful to hear from you. So glad to hear that you had a great cruise. Enjoy the snow.
For the first time we have a hummingbird (Hannah) nesting on a wind chime, with all of the Santa Ana winds they have been swinging back and forth–the 2 babies should hatch any moment.
Take care & Be well.

Carlos and Donna,
Sounds like you are having some fabulous adventures. If time allows, it would be great to see some of your cruise photos. Do you have any interesting anecdotes about the trip?
Happy travels!

I hope we hear from you both soon. But today
I want to wish Donna a Happy Mother’s Day. God Bless.

Happy Mother’s Day to Donna and to all the MODs out there!
It’s very hot here right now, and I hope it doesn’t mean that we’re in for a bad summer. Playing in that snow sounds very
enticing right now. Happy travels, Royals! Hope we have owls again one day!

Carlos and Donna, we are all eager to see a few of the hundreds of photos from your 30 day cruise around the Indian Ocean and your latest jaunts in the USA. Of course, we also want to hear of Austin’s progress at Platt College, even if some of us don’t exactly understand what those courses are. On this Memorial Day weekend, we thank you for your service to our country.Molly and McGee are still in our hearts, so thanks for that wonderful experience.
